AirFiber Introduces Industry's First Hitless and Fault-Tolerant Free Space Optics System; AirFiber 5800 Provides Capacity and Service Quality Previously Only Available Via Fiber.

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 2002

AirFiber Inc., a developer of carrier class free space optical (FSO (Free Space Optics) Transmitting optical signals through the air using infrared lasers. Also known as "wireless optics," FSO provides point-to-point and point-to-multipoint transmission at very high speeds without requiring a government license for use of the spectrum. ) access equipment, today unveiled the AirFiber 5800, a protocol-independent product with capacity of up to 1.25 Gigabits per second (Gbps) and the most advanced FSO system available.

Incorporating a breakthrough fault-tolerant system
This article contains specific implementations of fault tolerant systems. For general theory, see fault-tolerant design.

Fault-tolerance or graceful degradation
, the AirFiber 5800 guarantees carriers the capacity and service quality previously only available via fiber and enables carriers to write customer service level agreements using FSO products.

The AirFiber 5800 is the first FSO product to incorporate a proprietary "Redundant Link Controller" technology. For the first time ever, carriers can now deploy wireless links that are immune to data loss and provide reliable optical bandwidth to buildings, cell sites and other installations without the time and expense of fiber installation.

with the Redundant Link Controller (RLC RLC Residual lung capacity ), the AirFiber 5800 has the ability to simultaneously monitor redundant links. If interference occurs on one of the links, the RLC maintains error-free communications by using data supplied via the redundant link. This patent-pending technology is completely transparent to the network and occurs with absolutely no loss of data -- a capability not possible in other FSO products.

"The AirFiber 5800 will change the last mile challenge as we know it today," said Brett Helm, chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of AirFiber Inc. "As the first fault-tolerant product in the FSO industry, the AirFiber 5800 allows carriers to provide wireless service with the same quality and capacity as fiber."

As a true carrier class FSO product, the AirFiber 5800 complies with stringent carrier requirements and includes active monitoring and control mechanisms to automatically adjust for external environmental dynamics. AirFiber's patent-pending active tracking system maintains beam alignment to adjust for building or site movement while improving link distances and signal quality. A simple and quick automatic acquisition capability dramatically decreases installation time and provides increased scalability. Active environmental controls and a rigid equipment design ensure reliable operation during extreme temperature and weather events. All of these features help reduce carrier operational expenditures and ensure reliability.

"AirFiber has invested the time to fully understand carrier requirements for last mile solutions," said Helm. "As a result, we've created a disruptive technology A new technology that has a serious impact on the status quo and changes the way people have been dealing with something, perhaps for decades. Music CDs all but wiped out the phonograph industry within a few years, and digital cameras are destined to eliminate the film industry.  that addresses their issues. Now, carriers have the FSO tools to reliably, quickly and economically eliminate their last mile problem."
