Air2Web and the Weather Channel Develop New Mobile Weather Application Giving Consumers Colorful Satellite Images and Doppler Radar.

ATLANTA -- Air2Web today announces its role in building and supporting the latest generation of a mobile weather application from The Weather Channel Interactive (TWCi). The application, designed for use on J2ME-enabled devices, is now available to Sprint PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. Originally developed by Air2Web and TWCi two years ago, the wireless weather application quickly gained a large and loyal user base. It was one of the first downloadable applications in the information category (including news, weather, sports, finance and entertainment) and delivers some of the most popular content from The Weather Channel to consumers while they are away from their PCs. It was one of the first applications to give users access to an array of robust functionality including up-to-date, in-motion Doppler radar A system for measuring speed that is based on the Doppler effect. It is used in police radar systems as well as for measuring the velocity of hurricanes and tornadoes. See Doppler effect.  maps; hour-by-hour forecasts, complete with graphical imagery; extended forecasts; severe weather updates; and temperatures presented in either Metric or English unit English unit is the American name for a unit in one of a number of systems of units of measurement, some obsolete, and some still in use. In spite of the name, it does not necessarily refer to the (non-SI) system of units still in widespread, but mostly unofficial, use in England  systems.

With the launch of this new release, customers have access to all of the original functionality, while also receiving up-to-date, looping satellite images, a seven-day forecast summary, the UV Index, dew point dew point: see dew. , visibility, sunrise-sunset times and chance of precipitation. Another significant enhancement is the use of weather-related, graphical icons to help users navigate through the application more easily.

Downloadable applications, including those developed in J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) A version of Java 2 for cellphones, PDAs and consumer appliances. J2ME uses the K Virtual Machine (KVM), a specialized Java interpreter for devices with limited memory.  and BREW programming languages, have gained popularity because they can be downloaded directly to the handset thus making it easier to view colorful graphics, icons and large amounts of data. In fact, many of the major US wireless carriers support mobile J2ME applications. IDC, a leading IT analyst group, predicts that 30 million J2ME and BREW handsets will be sold in 2004, representing a growth of 111%.

Air2Web's top engineers and robust, mobile infrastructure are being used to extend this new mobile weather release to more than a dozen different J2ME devices. In addition to providing this mobile application to Sprint customers, TWCi and Air2Web plan to provide this application to other major U.S. carriers over the next several months.

"Air2Web worked with us to realize our vision for an exceptional mobile application in 2002, and they have once again enabled us to launch a cutting-edge product," said Louis Gump, director of mobile products and services for The Weather Channel Interactive. "Business relationships such as this one have helped us retain and extend our position as the leader in wireless weather content delivery as the market has evolved."

"Air2Web is very proud to have been involved in the development of this weather application from the beginning, and we are confident that this new release will attract even more users," said Dale Gonzalez, Air2Web CTO (Chief Technical Officer) The executive responsible for the technical direction of an organization. See CIO and salary survey. . "The application is not only highly functional and user-friendly, but more importantly, it allows consumers to access valuable weather information wherever they are, so they are always prepared. Consumers no longer have to rely solely on their TV, radio, or computer to stay abreast of the weather and its sudden changes. With the mobile weather application, users literally have all the information they need in the palm of their hand."

For a monthly fee of $3.99, consumers can register for this application by visiting www.weather.com/mobile.
