Britain's department for transport has published the 2005 National Statistics on Traffic including analysis by vehicle type and road class. These provisional figures indicate that estimated traffic levels have risen by the tiny margin of 0.3% in the year as a whole. In more detail car traffic was 0.4% lower but light vans increased by about 5% with goods vehicle traffic rising by 0.8%. Congress, courts could scuttle U.S.-EU ownership proposal. Some lawmakers criticized a proposal to ease limits on foreign investment in U.S. airlines, saying it could increase competition and hurt U.S. carriers. Congress or the courts could stop the plan, which the U.S. and EU agreed to last summer. The deal would also open London's Heathrow airport to more U.S. carriers. February 9, 2006
