Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) statement re: Delta Air Lines Inc. second-quarter earnings.


ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 27, 1995--

The following is a statement from the Air Line Pilots

Association (ALPA ALPA

Air Line Pilots Association
) regarding Delta Air Lines' second-quarter

earnings, which were released earlier today. The airline

showed record net income of $251 million, or $4.49 per share,

for the quarter.

We are encouraged by Delta's second-quarter earnings. The airline industry as a whole is showing drastic improvements as fares stabilize stabilize

 and yields increase. This improved financial picture includes airlines that have made cost reductions, as well as some that have not (i.e. USAir, Continental).

Delta pilots are committed to helping our company return to sustained profitability and will participate in the airline's cost-reduction program. In return for any investment the pilots make in our company, we are requesting a fair-value exchange. This 'value-for-value' concept must be resolved before a pilot investment takes place.

So far, although Delta management is asking the pilots for significant cost reductions -- 22 percent of the pilots' working agreement -- management has shown little interest in discussing this idea of a fair-value exchange.

"If the pilots participate in the cost-reduction program at such a substantial level," said Captain W.R. Brown, chairman of the Delta Master Executive Council, "we are even more resolved to obtain substantial returns in the way of job security, equity, representation on the board of directors, return of our furloughed pilots and other low-cost or no-cost `quality of life' items."

Of immediate concern to the Delta pilots is the issue of job security as it relates to connection carriers flying larger aircraft. This issue, which is addressed in the pilots' contractual Scope Clause, is the cornerstone cornerstone
