Report criticizes TSA for handling of air cargo on passenger planes. The TSA, charged with ensuring the safety of passenger planes, was raked over the coals in a recent report by the DHS inspector general. The report says the TSA has too few inspectors, an ineffective database to track violations and "vague regulations" for screening cargo bound for passenger planes. According to the Air Transport Association, commercial airlines carry 7,500 tons of cargo a day, last year earning $4.4 billion from cargo operations. Sep 7, 2007

Aviapartner, Martinair

Aviapartner signed a three-year network contract with Martinair for full cargo handling services at Cologne, Dusseldorf, Hanover, Berlin-Tegel, Muenster-Osnabruck, Dortmund, Leipzig, Dresden and Bremen. Aviapartner said that based on current estimated volumes the deal represents a value of at least [euro]1 million ($1.4 million) in annual turnover. Sep 3, 2007

Lufthansa Cargo

Lufthansa Cargo and German mail and logistics group Deutsche Post plan to create a cargo airline, according to widespread domestic press reports. The companies have applied to set up a 50/50 joint venture. A source close to the deal said that an announcement concerning the cooperation will be made this month. Operations could start in 2009 with a base at Leipzig/Halle. Sep 5, 2007

Lufthansa, DHL, Deutsche Post

Lufthansa, Deutsche Post Plan Cargo Airline. German mail and logistics group Deutsche Post and Lufthansa's air freight division plan to create a joint cargo carrier, Germany's competition regulator, according to the cartel office. The companies have applied for approval to set up a "joint airline for cargo flights", according to the authorities. A spokesman for Post's DHL express delivery division said it planned to expand its cooperation with Lufthansa, without giving further details. A Lufthansa spokesman said details would be announced shortly, without being more specific. Lufthansa Cargo and DHL Express have operated a network together between Europe, Asia and the US since March 2004, a large part of which is due later this year to start operating out of Leipzig/Halle Airport, where DHL Express is moving its main European hub.
