Aintree bell comes home.THE historic Grand National mounting bell will return to Aintree for this weekend's North West Racing Masters meeting, after it was bought for more than pounds 9,000 at auction. The bronze bell, which has been rung to get jockeys under starter's orders at every Aintree race meeting since 1831, was sold by the racecourse's former owners, the Topham family, at a sale of sporting memorabilia mem·o·ra·bil·i·a pl.n. 1. Objects valued for their connection with historical events, culture, or entertainment: posters, publicity photographs, and other movie memorabilia. 2. at Sotheby's. It was bought by today's owners and will be returned tomorrow in time for the weekend. The mounting bell was estimated to fetch between pounds 3,000 and pounds 5,000, but eventually went for pounds 9,000 plus pounds 1,350 buyer's premium.
