Aili Elisabet Hokkanen.


HOLDEN Aili Elisabet Hokkanen, 97, formerly of Worcester, passed away quietly at Holden Nursing Home on September 5, 2008, surrounded by family and her compassionate, caring staff at the Holden Nursing Home and the Evercare Network. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Toivo Sam Hokkanen in January 1992. She leaves her son, Sam H. Hokkanen and daughter-in-law Debra Ann Hokkanen of Holden. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Marie Hokkanen of Eastham, MA and several nieces and nephews.

Aili was born on April 20, 1911 in Pori, Finland and came to the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  in March 1925 aboard the SS Caronia. Aili very proudly became a United States citizen December 8, 1960.

Aili was employed as an AuPair for several years in Brookline, MA. She was a very vital giving person who enjoyed helping people especially the elderly. Aili was always happy with a smile for everyone and a quick wit.

She loved her animals and considered them one of the family. Ailis hobby was spending time in the garden, cultivating her flowers and vegetables. She always loved blueberry blueberry, plant of the large genus Vaccinium, widely distributed shrubs (occasionally small trees) of the family Ericaceae (heath family), usually found on acid soil. They are often confused with the related huckleberry. , strawberry and peach picking during the season, which was always followed by wonderful pies, cakes and sauces for her family and many friends.

She was a member of the Finnish American Finnish Americans are Americans of Finnish descent, who currently number about 700,000.

History
Finns first started coming to the United States in large numbers in the late 19th century, and continued until the mid 20th century.
 Club of Quincy and a member of Karhu Gymnastic Club in Quincy, MA where she met her husband. Aili and her family moved to Worcester in 1941. She was a member of Pilgrim Congregational con·gre·ga·tion·al
