AileyCamp comes to Berkeley. (News).


Starting this month, middle-school kids from the Berkeley/Oakland area of California have an opportunity that their fellow students in Kansas City Kansas City, two adjacent cities of the same name, one (1990 pop. 149,767), seat of Wyandotte co., NE Kansas (inc. 1859), the other (1990 pop. 435,146), Clay, Jackson, and Platte counties, NW Mo. Sponsored by Cal Performances, the newest AileyCamp--the first one on the West Coast, with a budget of $175,000--will take place from June 24 to August 2, with an end-of-session performance at 7:00 P.M. August 1 in Zellerbach Hall on the University of California, Berkeley The University of California, Berkeley is a public research university located in Berkeley, California, United States. Commonly referred to as UC Berkeley, Berkeley and Cal , campus. The camp's director is former Ailey faculty member David McCauley, a member of the Wing It! Performance Ensemble and Omega West Dance Company.

Established in 1989 during the last months of Alvin Ailey's life, AileyCamps are designed to expand visions, encourage self-determination, and foster physical, analytical, and artistic skills. They are not designed to produce dancers but, in the words of the Ailey company's rehearsal director, Ronni Favors, who used to direct AileyCamp, to teach 11- to 14-year-olds "about the intrinsic joy of accomplishment, which is something nobody can take away from them."

The seventy-five first-time campers will study ballet, Horton-based modern, jazz, West African, and folk dance. They will also take classes in performance skills, creative communication, and personal development. All activities are scheduled for the University of California The University of California has a combined student body of more than 191,000 students, over 1,340,000 living alumni, and a combined systemwide and campus endowment of just over $7.3 billion (8th largest in the United States).  campus (this is the first AileyCamp to be held at a college) in the hope that exposure to a university environment will make higher education attractive to any students who may not be considering it.

Eligible for this newest AileyCamp are middle school students from Berkeley and Oakland public schools The Oakland Public Schools are a comprehensive community public school district serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade from the borough of Oakland in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States.  who are at risk of dropping out, are interested in the arts, or who might benefit academically from engagement with the arts. All participants receive a full scholarship as well as meals and dance supplies. They will be recruited with the help of volunteers from Links, Inc., an association of African American African American Multiculture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. See Race.  professional women.
