Fabulous images of dancers--rapt in the physical and emotional art of movement, wrapped in simple costume, in front of brightly lit backdrops--leap from every page of Alley Spirit. The reader can almost feel the crescendo that surely must have propelled each dance r into the air; the drums and violins that must have coaxed that dancer to hold his or her long, strong extension.

 was buoyed by his many collaborations, as well as his strategic business sense in the later years, which created a self-sustaining legacy. Today, for example, 3,500 children from around the world learn the "Ailey way" under watchful eyes of devoted Ailey proteges, and the beautiful and commanding presence of former dancer and artistic director Judith Jamison, who has gone well beyond the definition of "keeper of the flame."

Of course, Ailey Spirit is a tribute to Ailey and all that his dream has become. More importantly, the book is a tribute to modern African American African American Multiculture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. See Race.  cultural history and Alley's rightful place in it.
