THE Afghan war has now lasted 8 years - this is longer than either the 'world wars' or Vietnam Vietnam (vēĕt`näm), officially Socialist Republic of Vietnam, republic (v), 128,400 sq mi (332,642 sq km), Southeast Asia. Occupying the eastern coastline of the Southeast Asian peninsula, Vietnam is bounded by China on the north, by Laos .

As troop numbers have increased each year, the situation has deteriorated and greater numbers have died.

From previous experience, when each time we were told more troops would solve the problem , and didn't, there is no logical reason to suppose that further increases would improve the situation now.

What we could expect are greater casualties.

The situation is becoming ever more complex and less stable, with no-one really knowing what should be done to clear up the 'mess' produced by the initial, badly conceived, invasion in 2001.

The proposed Karzai government, backed by the Western powers, is recognised to be basically very corrupt and is not helping to improve the lives of ordinary Afghan people. Is it right that young lives should be put at risk to keep him and his associate warlords Warlords may refer to:
  • The plural of Warlord, a name for a figure who has military authority but not legal authority over a subnational region.

 in power ? A draw-down in military activity and massive increase in humanitarian assistance is much more likely to produce a positive result.

It would be welcomed by the people we purport To convey, imply, or profess; to have an appearance or effect.

The purport of an instrument generally refers to its facial appearance or import, as distinguished from the tenor of an instrument, which means an exact copy or duplicate.
