Aha! A Two-Volume Collection: Aha! Insight and Aha! Gotcha.

Aha! A Two-Volume Collection: Aha! Insight and Aha! Gotcha (jargon, programming) gotcha - A misfeature of a system, especially a programming language or environment, that tends to breed bugs or mistakes because it both enticingly easy to invoke and completely unexpected and/or unreasonable in its outcome.

Martin Gardner Martin Gardner (b. October 21, 1914, Tulsa, Oklahoma) is a popular American mathematics and science writer specializing in recreational mathematics, but with interests encompassing magic (conjuring), pseudoscience, literature (especially Lewis Carroll), philosophy, and religion.  Published by the Mathematical Association of America The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is a professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics education. Members include teachers at the college and high school level; graduate and undergraduate students; and mathematicians and scientists. , 2006 368 pp., hard cover ISBN ISBN

Most mathematics teachers probably have at least one of the two volumes in a well-thumbed state on their shelves but might like an "upgrade" to a hardcover single book. The only drawbacks I could find are the lack of a second colour and the weight of the book, making it heavy for casual fun browsing. Reference is made to collections of materials on CDs and in other publications available through the MAA MAA

The Aha! books, as they are referred to by fans of the author Martin Gardner, contain 144 wonderful puzzles. In this combined volume, you will find puzzles ranging from geometry, logic, probability, statistics, number, time, to combinatorics combinatorics (kŏm'bənətôr`ĭks) or combinatorial analysis (kŏm'bĭnətôr`ēəl) , and word play. Gardner calls these puzzles "aha! problems," that
seem difficult, and indeed are difficult if
you go about trying to solve them in traditional
ways. But if you can free your mind
   from standard problem solving techniques,
you may be receptive to an aha!
reaction that leads immediately to a solution.
Don't be discouraged if, at first, you
have difficulty with these problems. Try
your best to solve each one before you
read the answer. After a while you will
begin to catch the spirit of offbeat, nonlinear
thinking, and you may be surprised
to find your aha! ability improving.

People who possess a high aha! ability are all intelligent to a moderate level, but beyond that level there seems to be no correlation between high intelligence and aha! thinking. So dig into some of the puzzles in this book, discuss them with your talented and gifted Talented and Gifted or Gifted and Talented may refer to:
  • Intellectual giftedness, an intellectual ability significantly higher than average
  • National Association for Gifted Children, a UK organization
students, make them available to maths clubs, and prepare yourself for an aha! experience. Make sure you put your name in your copy as this kind of book seems very likely to "stray" since every time it is read there appears to be another aha! event!
