The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  Patent number 5443978 protects AgriDyne's discovery of a key pyrethrum enzyme, the gene corresponding to that enzyme and the use of both the gene and the enzyme in producing pyrethrum.

, vice president of business development. "In addition to providing important intellectual property protection, the patent validates our technology and strategy for producing a reliable supply of pyrethrum for the global insecticide market."

Pyrethrum, a mixture of related chemicals normally extracted from plants grown in parts of Africa and Asia, is an effective, fast acting insecticide that has low mammalian toxicity and decomposes rapidly in the environment.

The supply of naturally-extracted pyrethrum has experienced periods of significant shortage and high prices in the past. AgriDyne's pyrethrum related research centers on the use of recombinant micro-organisms containing plant genes to produce pyrethrum molecules.

AgriDyne previously announced that the company has signed an agreement to merge with biosys inc. The merger of the two biopesticide companies is intended to increase the combined company's role in developing and commercializing safe and effective methods of insect control.

AgriDyne Technologies, based in Salt Lake City, is committed to solving pest-control and plant-care problems through the development and marketing of innovative, environmentally compatible crop-protection products.
