Agreement reached for hazardous waste cleanup at the Duncan Drum Burial site in Duncan, S.C.


ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 1996--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and  today announced that it has entered into an Administrative Order An order covering traffic, supplies, maintenance, evacuation, personnel, and other administrative details.  on Consent (AOC AOC,
n an acronym for the Aromatherapy Organizations Council.
) with Sybron Chemicals, Inc. for a Superfund removal at the Duncan Drum Burial site in Duncan, Spartanburg County, S.C.

The AOC requires Sybron Chemicals, Inc. to excavate buried drums and any associated contaminated contaminated,
v 1. made radioactive by the addition of small quantities of radioactive material.
2. made contaminated by adding infective or radiographic materials.
3. an infective surface or object.
 soil. Also, the company is required to transport the excavated materials to off-site permitted facilities for disposal.

 believes 100 to 200 drums containing chemical wastes from the textile industry are buried at the site. Sybron has been identified as the generator of some of the buried drums and has cooperated with EPA. EPA will continue its efforts to identify other parties potentially responsible for contaminating the site.
