Agreement concluded between Packard Bell and NEC on merger of worldwide PC operations; transaction creates $8 billion global PC power to be called ''Packard Bell NEC''.


SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 1996--Packard Bell Electronics Inc. and NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

When the merger is fully implemented, Packard Bell NEC will employ approximately 6,000 people throughout the United States and 8,000 globally. Packard Bell NEC will operate manufacturing facilities in Sacramento; Fife, Wash.; Angers, France; Australia; and China.

In addition, technical and service/support facilities are located in the United States, Europe and the Far East; research and development facilities are located in the United States, Europe and Israel. Overall, the company is represented in more than 125 countries.

Packard Bell NEC is further positioned for future multimedia- technology development as a result of NEC's engineering and technological expertise, from electronic components and devices to telecommunications Communicating information, including data, text, pictures, voice and video over long distance.
