Redmond's last contact with his mother was a phone call from prison as her life ebbed away.

His dad, Ryan O'Neal, said last night: "He told her how much he loved her and asked her to please forgive him - that he was so very,very sorry."

Redmond last saw Farrah in April, when he was allowed toleave prison under a police escort to visit her in hospital.

He was taken back to his cell after three hours.
