Tunable Laser Leader Enters Transponder Market with Small, MSA (Metropolitan Service Area) An urban area with at least 50,000 people plus surrounding counties. There are 306 MSAs and 428 RSAs (rural service areas) in the U.S. MSAs and RSAs are used to allocate cellular licenses.

Footprint Product for Full Band Coverage

Agility Communications, Inc., the award-winning manufacturer of widely tunable components for metro, switching, and long-haul markets, today announced the industry's first universal transponder, the Agility(TM) 7100 series 10Gbps DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

Universal Transponder. With the Agility 7155 covering the C-band and the 7156 covering the L-band, the Agility 7100 series offers fast tuning across 200 channels with 100 kilometer reach, all in a small (3.5-x 4.5-inch), 300-pin MSA (multi-source agreement) package. The first commercially viable, full-band tunable transponder, the Agility Universal Transponder is integrated with Agility's Telcordia-qualified widely tunable laser.  reduced costs and higher levels of integration, Agility's universal applications include one-time provisioning, fast switching, sparing, reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs), and SONET protection switching spanning both metro and long-haul markets. The company will be demonstrating the 7100 series at the Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) 2003 Conference and Expo in Atlanta, March 24-28.

Agility Universal Transponder Expands List of Industry Firsts

With the announcement of the industry's first universal transponder, Agility continues to realize numerous industry firsts, including being the first widely tunable laser company to announce Telcordia qualification, in March 2002. Agility is also the first widely tunable laser company to announce a top-tier, publicly traded company publicly traded company

, Lightscape Networks, as a customer and strategic partner. With the November 2002 announcement of the 3205 widely tunable laser, Agility is the first company to announce product availability to the tunable MSA industry standard supported by Alcatel Optronics and Bookham Technologies.

"Agility is thrilled to offer customers a higher level of integration, with our MSA transponder," said Arlon Martin, vice president of sales and marketing for Agility Communications. "Higher levels of integration and standardization in the industry reduce costs to new levels, which is a requirement in this marketplace. Our customers can now focus on the software applications that will ultimately differentiate them and bring them success. We are excited to bring this important product to market."

"Integration of additional features and functionality is critical for component companies needing to secure key design wins in the current climate," said Vladimir Kozlov, senior analyst with RHK RHK Ratahallintokeskus (Finnish: Finnish Rail Administration)
RHK Ryan Hankin Kent (RHK, Inc. marketing consulting firm)
RHK Rigshospitalets Kollegium (Copenhagen, Denmark dorm)
. "Component companies that are able to move up the food chain and offer companies additional levels of integration not only have a competitive advantage, but will also be able to secure key design wins now that will translate into high volumes once customers begin purchasing again."

About the Agility 7100 Universal Transponder

The Agility 7100 Universal Transponder is the result of integrating a transmitter and a receiver in the same physical package. Leveraging the Agility 20-mW CW widely tunable laser, the Agility Universal Transponder 7155 and 7156 are designed for use in dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) systems spanning the entire C-band, providing tunability for 200 ITU (International Telecommunication Union, Geneva, Switzerland, www.itu.ch) A telecommunications standards body that is under the auspices of the United Nations. Comprising more than 185 member countries, the ITU sets standards for global telecom networks.  channels with 25-GHz spacing via an I2C I2C Inter-Integrated Circuit

interface. Specifically, the Agility 7155 covers the C-band and the 7156 cover the L-band. The Agility 7100 is available in the 300-pin MSA footprint and supports 10G long-reach applications. The Agility 7100 has a built-in optical blanking shutter used during wavelength tuning; a built-in variable optical attenuator (VOA (Variable Optical Attenuator) A device that can incrementally adjust the power of the optical signal passing through it. ) for automatic transmitter output power control; and modulator Modulator
