The Nano Instruments business was founded in 1983 and is located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee Oak Ridge is an incorporated city in Anderson and Roane Counties in East Tennessee, about 25 miles northwest of Knoxville. Oak Ridge's population was 27,387 people at the 2000 census. . MTS Systems acquired the company in 1998. The majority of MTS's instrument business serves the automotive market and thus is not focused on nano techniques. Nanotechnology is a target market for Agilent's Materials Science Solution Unit, making for a more suitable fit.
