(NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange : A) today announced it will demonstrate the industry's first 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel storage area network (SAN) at the Storage Networking World conference in Phoenix, Ariz., April 5-8, at Booth C1. In tests conducted at Agilent, the Tachyon DX4+ Fibre Channel controller exceeded more than 700 MB/s of bandwidth in a single 4 Gb channel. This level of bandwidth performance is significantly higher than the industry's previous maximum of 390 MB/s in a 2 Gb single-channel controller. The ever-increasing amount of corporate electronic data requires SANs to store and retrieve more data at higher speeds. The emerging 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel standard addresses this need for higher performance. "We are extremely pleased with the bandwidth performance results of our Tachyon DX4+," said Erik Ottem, marketing director of Agilent's Input/Output Solutions Division. "Not only are we the first to market with a 4 Gb Fibre Channel controller, we're also the first to demonstrate an end-to-end SAN with all the necessary 4 Gb building blocks and test equipment." At the conference, Agilent's HPFC-5700A Tachyon DX4+ Fibre Channel controller will provide the "host server" and "target server to disk" connections in the SAN demonstration. The demonstration will feature an end-to-end 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel video and data transmission link. It includes an enterprise server communicating with its data center server to access streaming video and data from a JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) A group of hard disks in a computer that are not set up as any type of RAID configuration. They are just a bunch of disks. JBOD - Just a Bunch Of Disks (just a bunch of disks See JBOD. The Tachyon DX4+ is configured as a host server/initiator that transmits and receives 4 Gb/s video and data through an Agilent AFBR-57R5P 4 Gb/s SFP SFP Small Form-factor Pluggable (optical transceiver module) SFP Société Française de Physique (French Physics Society; Paris) Sfp Svenska Folkpartiet (Finnish: Swedish People~s Party) fiber-optic transceiver connected to an Agilent HDMP-0540 22-port loop switch. The loop switch is connected to a 4/2 Gb/s target-to-disk server accessing a 2 Gb/s JBOD storage array. Additionally, an Agilent 1733A SAN tester is configured to generate 4 Gb/s traffic through ports of the loop switch as well as display 4 Gb traffic and link rates. Agilent 4 Gb Fibre Channel Solutions Agilent is a leading supplier of 4 Gb Fibre Channel component, board and test solutions. No other vendor offers protocol, physical layer and fiber-optic components combined with leading-edge signal and protocol testing. More than half of all storage-networked arrays use Agilent components. More information is available at www.agilent.com/view/storage. About Agilent Technologies Agilent Technologies Inc.
