TIM is the world's leading operator of GSM technology and Europe's largest provider of mobile services, with nearly 47 million customers worldwide, and almost 22 million in Italy. Roaming services are used primarily by business customers, the most lucrative segment of a GSM Service Provider's customer base, and typically account for a significant percentage of a company's revenues and profits.

Agilent's RMS enables TIM to continuously monitor -- in real time -- services for both its own subscribers when they roam in external networks, and for customers from other companies when they roam in TIM's network. TIM uses RMS to identify and correct network and subscriber-authentication problems in real-time before customers are affected. By maintaining network and service availability and reliability, the company can reduce subscriber "churn" -- customers switching from one network to the next -- which protects significant revenue. RMS also facilitates transparent and effective relations with foreign operators with whom TIM has roaming agreements.

"Our company's success depends largely on the satisfaction of sophisticated business clients, and these are the most likely customers to switch providers when they don't obtain the service they need," said Mario Nespoli, Technologies and Architectures manager at TIM. "Business customers travel frequently and depend heavily on roaming services while abroad. The Agilent solutions help us maintain and enlarge this critical segment of our customer base by enhancing our worldwide reputation for quality, reliability and breadth in services."

"High-quality roaming services can be decisive in the fierce competition among service providers for business customers," said Malcolm Russell, manager of Agilent's Solution Center.
