Agilent Technologies Offers CDMAdvantage Dual-Band Upconverter MMIC For 1900MHz CDMA AND AMPS; Operates at Only 3V -- a Single Lithium Ion Cell.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 22, 2000

Agilent Technologies, Inc. (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:A) today announced the Agilent HPMX-7201, a dual-band, dual-mode upconverter MMIC (Monolithic Microwave IC) An integrated circuit used in high-frequency applications such as mobile phones. Also known as "monolithic microwave/millimeter-wave IC," MMICs combine transistors and passive devices (resistors, capacitors, etc. .

The HPMX-7201 is designed for use in dual-mode mobile phone handsets combining 1900MHz digital PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. This radio spectrum in the 1.  CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band.  (code division multiple access) and 800MHz AMPS (advanced mobile phone service Advanced Mobile Phone Service, Inc. was a subsidiary of AT&T prior to the Bell System Divestiture. Abbreviated AMPS, the company was created in 1978 to build and operate the new Advanced Mobile Phone System also abbreviated AMPS. ) capabilities. It operates from 3 volts nominal (2.7 to 3.3V), making it ideal for use with a single-cell lithium ion battery. This product is on display at the Wireless Symposium/Portable by Design Show, San Jose, Calif., Feb. 22 through Feb. 24, 2000.

The PCS CDMA transmit chain provides excellent adjacent channel power rejection (typically -59dBc/30kHz @ Pout= +11dBm) and a low-noise floor for compliance with Telecommunications Industry Association See TIA.

(body, standard) Telecommunications Industry Association - (TIA) An association that sets standards for communications cabling.

Cables that TIA set standards for include: EIA/TIA-568A and EIA/TIA-568B category three, four and five cable.
standard TIA (1) (Telecommunications Industry Association, Arlington, VA, www.tiaonline.org) A membership organization founded in 1988 that sets telecommunications standards worldwide. It was originally an EIA working group that was spun off and merged with the U.S. 98-C. The CDMA driver has a high output power (up to +10dBm) to permit it to directly drive handset power amplifiers, and incorporates a switch on the output to support split-band filtering. In addition, the driver is adaptively biased to reduce current consumption and extend battery life. Essentially, when less gain is required, the current draw is significantly reduced. In addition, the drivers can be directly powered from the battery for enhanced performance. A power-down function reduces the supply current to 1 microamp typical, to support gated operation and eliminate the need for a power supply switch.

For AMPS operation, an integrated image reject upconverter eliminates the need for a filter between the mixer and the driver amplifier.

The HPMX-7201 is available in an industry-standard TQFP-32 package. The MMIC is fabricated on a highly reliable Si bipolar process with an Fmax of 40GHz. The part has a measured MTTF See reliability.  in excess of 50 years (at junction temperature of 100 degrees C).

The new HPMX-7201 upconverter MMIC is the latest release in Agilent's CDMAdvantage RF chipset. Already shipping in volume to CDMA handset manufacturers is the previously released Agilent MGA-72543 bypass-switched LNA and a dual-band power amplifier. The CDMAdvantage RF chipset will include all active RF functions required in a CDMA handset. It uses Agilent second-generation PHEMT See FET.  (pseudomorphic high-electron-mobility transistor), advanced silicon bipolar, and film bulk acoustic resonator resonator /res·o·na·tor/ (rez´o-na?ter)
