) software package for the Agilent MPEGscope product family at the National Association of Broadcasters convention (NAB2000), April 10 to 13, Booth M9370. This product extends the analysis and composing functionality of the MPEGscope to allow testing of data broadcasting and interactive television implementations.

DSM-CC was originally intended to provide VCR-like control of an MPEG-2 transport stream across a network. Recently, however, broadcasters and service providers have applied the DSM-CC mechanism extensively for Internet data delivery (mainly via satellite) and interactive television.

As satellite broadcasters quickly roll out new services to carry Internet traffic Internet traffic is the flow of data around the Internet. It includes web traffic, which is the amount of that data that is related to the World Wide Web, along with the traffic from other major uses of the Internet, such as electronic mail and peer-to-peer networks. , their networks are mutating to include Internet Service Provider Internet service provider (ISP)

Company that provides Internet connections and services to individuals and organizations. For a monthly fee, ISPs provide computer users with a connection to their site (see data transmission), as well as a log-in name and password.

) characteristics. New devices, such as IP-packet encapsulators, are appearing at uplink sites, and routers are appearing at downlink sites. The satellites themselves are starting to provide caching of frequently downloaded material, making them more than mere reflectors of the bit-streams passed up to them. All of these elements must work seamlessly with each other and with other parts of the network if these new services are going to pay off. The DSM-CC extensions to the MPEGscope enable engineers to verify the integrity of data being passed through the network.

"The worlds of broadcasting and the Internet are colliding, and Agilent already has excellent solutions in both areas with the MPEGscope and IP test solutions," said Todd Law, product-marketing engineer for Agilent's Advanced Networks Division.

DSM-CC has also found application in the area of interactive television. Carrying auxiliary information that accompanies digital television broadcasts, DSM-CC will allow viewers to extract information from "data carousels" in the MPEG-2 stream. For example, viewers of a baseball game Noun 1. baseball game - a ball game played with a bat and ball between two teams of nine players; teams take turns at bat trying to score runs; "he played baseball in high school"; "there was a baseball game on every empty lot"; "there was a desire for National League  might be able to extract detailed statistics on a particular player as he steps up to bat.

The DSM-CC software package enables analysis of DSM-CC sections, as well as the composing of transport streams with DSM-CC sections.
