(NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :A) announced today at the 2000 Wireless Symposium/Portable by Design show a new vector signal analyzer The vector signal analyzer (VSA) is a powerful tool that can perform many of the same measurement and characterization tasks that the spectrum analyzer (SA) can, but it can also perform many more useful digital demodulation functions. (VSA VSA (in New Zealand) Voluntary Service Abroad ) series that provides, for the first time, a tightly linked software/hardware design environment that gives engineers a way to apply powerful signal analysis capabilities at any stage of the realization process. The Agilent 89600 series VSA facilitates faster and easier communication system designs from initial design simulation to final hardware prototype. It offers 36MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. bandwidth capacity for measuring RF signals up to 2.7GHz, such as cellular and satellite communications, digital video and local multipoint distribution service LMDS is a broadband wireless access technology governed by the IEEE and is outlined by the 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee through the efforts of the IEEE 802.16.1 Task Group. LMDS commonly operates on microwave frequencies across the 26GHz and 29GHz bands. (LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Service) A digital wireless transmission system that works in the 28 GHz range in the U.S. and 24-40 GHz overseas. It requires line of sight between transmitter and receiving antenna, which can be from one to four miles apart ). It is also available with a VXI-based front end using one or two baseband inputs and covering bandwidths to 40MHz. This capability is critical for RF wireless and emerging communication systems design and verification. "Working with hard-to-measure signals -- burst, hopped, modulated -- has been an ongoing challenge faced by designers of today's high-performance communication systems," said Elizabeth Aguilar, product manager for the 89600 vector signal analyzer series. "When creating a new design, it takes time to look under all the rocks that may be hiding the real cause of why it doesn't work right. "The Agilent 89600 VSA combines time-, frequency- and modulation-domain analysis to provide measurements and displays that help designers look in the right place sooner." The 89600 is an integrated solution of VXI (VME EXtensions for Instrumentation) A peripheral bus specialized for data acquisition and real time control systems. Introduced in 1987, VXI uses all Eurocard form factors and adds trigger lines, a local bus and other functions suited for measurement applications. hardware and measurement software which resides on a PC using Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. (R). It is the first offering of a PC-hosted VSA for communications design. Engineers can now use familiar and powerful measurement tools in the same operating environment where most of their design work takes place. With the 89600, measurement, design simulation, modeling and documentation are all available to the engineer in the same integrated interface. Data can be easily moved back and forth between the analyzer and most Windows(R) applications with a simple cut/paste operation. In addition, the 89600 series VSA can accept data from a variety of software and hardware sources. Its PC-centric software improves ease of use and enhances integration with other PC tools without sacrificing measurement potential. The Agilent 89600 series VSA links to Advanced Design System (ADS) electronic design automation software from Agilent's EEsof product group. This means that the VSA can accompany the designer through all the phases of design and evaluation. Designers now have a single software/hardware tool that allows the evaluation of computational results from simulation software as well as measured results from hardware with the same processing algorithms. Models developed using ADS, Matlab, or other design software can now be evaluated using the 89600 series VSA software. U.S. Pricing and Availability The Agilent 89600 series vector signal analyzer will be available in May at approximate prices of $44,000 for the 89610A baseband version, $70,000 for the 89640A RF version and $20,000 for the optional link to Advanced Design System. Measurement software for the 89600 runs on PCs using Windows NT. About Agilent Technologies Agilent Technologies, Inc.
