Agilent Technologies Delivers Industry's First Low Cost Diagnostic and Repair Solution for GPRS Mobile Phones; Cost-Effective Test Set Reduces GPRS Phone Repair Time and Costs.

Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:A) today introduced the first low cost General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) mobile phone diagnostic and repair solution designed for mobile phone repair centers. This test set can significantly reduce GPRS repair costs and streamline GPRS mobile phone repairs. The solution is designed to enable service technicians to detect immediately if a phone is faulty and to identify what type of repair is needed.

Each year approximately 10 to 20 percent of the 425 million wireless phones in use are returned for repair or replacement, and 40 percent of those phones returned are found to be in good working order.

"Agilent's test and repair solution will significantly reduce the number of GPRS phones that are sent back to the manufacturers," said LuAnn Piccard, vice president and general manager for Agilent's Wireless Network Solutions. "At less than half the cost of the high-end manufacturing test sets, our GPRS test set capability increases the repair functions of local repair centers and allows for quick and accurate repairs of faulty GPRS mobile phones."

Currently GPRS mobile phones are predominantly available in Europe. With the expansion of GPRS services, availability in Europe, Asia, and the United States is expected to grow dramatically by 2002. Agilent's GPRS test set will prepare phone manufacturers for the transition to 3G technology and provide a tool to maintain service quality to their wireless customers.

U.S. Pricing and Availability

Agilent's upgradeable GPRS mobile station test set is expected to be available Oct. 1, 2001. Prices start at $1,909 for upgrades and $13,349 for new systems.
