) enables the support of diverse technologies that will be phased in throughout the next six months, starting with GSM, UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) The GSM implementation of the 3G wireless phone system. Part of IMT-2000, UMTS provides service in the 2 GHz band and offers global roaming and personalized features.  and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band. . These solutions enable telecommunications providers to characterize service behavior and quickly pinpoint service and customer problems, ensuring a high-quality customer experience, while reducing capital and operational expenditures.

Agilent's next-generation, end-to-end test probe offers a sleeker chassis and added flexibility to easily replace probes with upgraded or new device technology. Future enhancements will enable users to remove and relocate test probes for remote testing. Because WQM supports multiple technologies, total cost of ownership is significantly reduced.

The new solution dramatically improves efficiency through simple deployment, new testing options and easy-to-use reports. Now that users can install the hot-swappable remote probes in less than 15 minutes, they can get immediate value from the system.

The evolutionary WQM software platform adds support for CDMA as well as more advanced tests for GSM services. Graphical troubleshooting reports help customer service and network operations personnel isolate and identify service-related problems faster and with less expertise, saving service providers capital and operational expenses and improving their operational efficiency.

To ease interoperability with non-Agilent systems, the solution includes service tests that are compliant with ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Sophia Antipolis technical park, Nice, France, www.etsi.org) A non-profit membership organization founded in 1988, dedicated to standardizing information and communication technologies (ICT) throughout Europe.  (European Telecommunications Standards Institute (body) European Telecommunications Standards Institute - (ETSI) A European version of the ITU-T(?). ) standards.

"Agilent is the leading supplier in the probe systems market with large-scale deployments at many of the tier-one and -two operators in the world," said Patrick Kelly at OSS Oss (ôs), city (1994 pop. 62,141), North Brabant prov., S Netherlands; chartered 1399. "Distributed network architectures will fundamentally shift how networks are operated in the future. The value of WQM is in its ability to extend support for new technologies and map this rich data to customer and service performance."

"As intelligence moves to the network edge and end-user devices, we're looking to capture new data that will bring an even more complete picture of customers' service experience," said Tom White, president of Agilent's Operations Support Systems Operations Support Systems (also called Operational Support Systems or OSS) are computer systems used by telecommunications service providers. "As new applications and network technologies continue to evolve, WQM's flexible platform can quickly adapt to new customer applications."
