:A), a leading provider of innovative technologies for communications and life sciences, demonstrated its support for the Storage Networking Industry Association's (SNIA) Technology Center Grand Opening today in Colorado Springs, Colo. The 14,000+ square foot center, the largest independent storage networking complex in the world, will support the SNIA by providing testing laboratories as well as educational and training facilities. The center will also facilitate the gathering of work groups to progress the study, development and recommendation of storage standards to the appropriate standards bodies Following are some of the standards bodies defined in this database. For Windows users of CDE, look up Lessons/Review/Associations. For Web users of CDE's online HTML version, review the Lessons list at the bottom of the definition.

As part of the grand opening, Agilent Technologies will demonstrate its Host Bus Adapter See host adapter.  (HBA (Host Bus Adapter) See host adapter. ) common Application Programming Interface (API (Application Programming Interface) A language and message format used by an application program to communicate with the operating system or some other control program such as a database management system (DBMS) or communications protocol. ) supporting storage area networking (SAN) management applications such as HighGround's Storage Resource Manager, InterSAN's Storage Utility Management software and Hewlett Packard's SAN Manager DM. Agilent is working closely with the SNIA Fibre Channel Working Group on a HBA common API proposal for industry-wide adoption. By providing a common interface among manufacturers of Fibre Channel HBAs, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) will be able to quickly add new features to their SAN management applications without also having to support multiple APIs that would increase development time and can cause compatibility and interoperability problems.

Providing a common and consistent interface view of managed resources is a major challenge facing SAN management software vendors. As Fibre Channel SANs grow in complexity, there is a need for a common management method to access information from a wide variety of HBAs within a multi-platform, multi-vendor environment. The HBA common API standards effort will make Fibre Channel SANs easier to manage and will help accelerate their adoption and drive future applications.

"Developing standards to allow SAN manageability is critical for broad SAN implementations," said Bob Whitson, worldwide marketing manager for Agilent's Storage Networking Division. "The SNIA Technology Center is ensuring the success of this effort by providing the vehicle and tools for vendors to work together."

"With today's Grand Opening of the SNIA Technology Center, the SNIA membership has succeeded in building an environment that will, without a doubt, help to accelerate our mission: the promotion and evolution of storage networking," said Larry Krantz Krantz is the name of two persons:

  • Grover Krantz Bigfoot researcher
, chairman of the SNIA. "The SNIA education, training and standards developments are ultimately the future of storage networking. We believe that the SNIA Technology Center is a giant step toward supplying vendors, providers and more importantly, customers, with a centralized cen·tral·ize

About The Technology Center

As a laboratory, the Technology Center embodies the SNIA vision by offering this new facility and providing members with the opportunity to profile enterprise storage systems, computing platforms -- including Fibre Channel and NAS (1) See network access server.

(2) (Network Attached Storage) A specialized file server that connects to the network. A NAS device contains a slimmed-down operating system and a file system and processes only I/O requests by supporting the popular
infrastructures -- and products. With its Grand Opening today, the SNIA Technology Center will showcase the development and testing of advanced network storage technologies that require interoperability of multi-vendor storage products.

The SNIA is dedicated to ensuring that storage networks become a completed and trusted solution across the IT community, and fulfills this mission by bringing together vendors and IT staff from the storage industry to define product requirements. Agilent Storage Networking Solutions

Agilent is a leading supplier of 2 Gb/s Fibre Channel solutions for the high-performance, enterprise-class SAN market. Agilent provides integrated HBA solutions as well as industry-leading Tachyon tachyon (tăk`ēŏn'), hypothetical elementary particle that travels only at speeds exceeding that of light. According to the theory of relativity, the speed of light is the limiting velocity for all ordinary material particles.  Fibre Channel protocol chips, fiber optics fiber optics, transmission of digitized messages or information by light pulses along hair-thin glass fibers. Each fiber is surrounded by a cladding having a high index of refractance so that the light is internally reflected and travels the length of the fiber , high-speed serializer/deserializer (SerDes), and port bypass ICs. Additionally, Agilent is partnering with Adaptec to tailor Fibre Channel solutions for worldwide PC server OEMs and resellers.
