: A) today announced an industry-first solution that enables service providers to derive the location of a mobile handset. Agilent acceSS7 Location allows wireless service providers to accelerate revenue-generating location-based services right away, using existing equipment.

The Agilent acceSS7 solution enables GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications (communications) Global System for Mobile Communications - (GSM, originally "Groupe de travail Sp?ciale pour les services Mobiles") One of the major standards for digital cellular communications, in use in over 60 countries and serving over one billion subscribers. ) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) service providers to accelerate large-scale deployment of revenue-generating location-based services, without the large expense of adding additional network hardware or requiring customers to upgrade their phones.

acceSS7 Location is based on Agilent's industry-leading link-monitoring solutions and newly developed hardware and patented software, which is able to acquire, correlate and analyze signaling data to derive the location of a mobile handset. This will enable service providers to provide fleet and asset management applications to corporate customers, and to offer individual subscribers targeted advertising or the ability to request notification on the whereabouts of a friend.

Revenues from voice services are beginning to peak, and service providers regard location-based services as critical for generating growth by creating new value-added revenue streams. "Subscriber location technologies must enable service providers to develop and deploy location-based services rapidly and allow these services to be available to as many customers as possible," said Andy Belcher vice president and general manager of Agilent's Telecom Systems Division. "Alternative location solutions don't make this easy or even possible, but we believe acceSS7 Location is a major breakthrough."

The solution provides a continuous stream of real-time location information for all active subscribers. Because it is extremely scalable and does not require additional network infrastructure, acceSS7 Location does not affect network performance.

Agilent is working with a specialized application provider, Applied Generics, to enhance the location accuracy of the solution. The location information can be used for real-time applications or stored for post activity analysis.
