:A) and Lumileds Lighting today introduced the first three products in the new Envisium mid-power family of light-emitting diodes. The Envisium Power PLCC-4 (plastic leaded chip carrier A Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier (PLCC) is a four-sided “J”-leaded plastic integrated circuit package with pin spacings of 0.05" (1.27 mm). Lead counts range from 20 to 84. PLCC packages can be square or rectangular. Body widths range from .35" to 1.15". ) surface-mount (SMT) LEDs are primarily intended for automotive exterior lighting, such as center high-mounted stoplights, front turn signals, rear combination turn, tail and stoplights, and mirror turn signals; and interior lighting applications, such as instrument panel and control backlighting back·light

The Envisium Power PLCC-4 SMT LEDs, available in red, red-orange and amber, fill the need for mid-power illumination capabilities between the current Agilent PLCC-4 products, operating at up to 200 mW power levels, and Lumileds Lighting's Luxeon LED light sources that operate at power levels of 1 watt and higher. Other applications include home and commercial-building mood lighting and highlighting, garden lighting, and illuminated signs and signals.

"Agilent and Lumileds are already the optoelectronics market leaders," said Soo-Ghee Lee, vice president and general manager for the Optoelectronic Products Division in Agilent's Semiconductor Products Group. "On the strength of this new co-development relationship, we intend to increase our lead in fast-growing markets with a compelling set of Envisium solutions for automotive, consumer electronics and mobile phone customers. We'll apply our well-known quality, competitive pricing, worldwide customer support and industry-best lead times to win in our markets."

The use of high-performance Lumileds Lighting TS AlInGaP (transparent-substrate aluminum indium gallium phosphide Indium gallium phosphide (InGaP) is a semiconductor composed of indium, gallium and phosphorus. It is used in high-power and high-frequency electronics because of its superior electron velocity with respect to the more common semiconductors silicon and gallium arsenide. ) LED die enables the new LEDs to produce higher luminous flux The energy field generated by light. See lumen.
Luminous flux

The time rate of flow of light. It is radiant flux in the form of electromagnetic waves which affects the eye or, more strictly, the time rate of flow of radiant energy evaluated according to
output than any other PLCC-4 LEDs on the market. For example, the Envisium Power PLCC-4 SMT LEDs feature higher luminous output than the nearest competitor's offerings, which are widely used for automotive signaling applications.

"The Envisium Power PLCC-4 LEDs offer the best specifications in the industry," said Jason Posselt, director of product marketing at Lumileds Lighting. "They also offer much higher quality and reliability and superior mechanical characteristics to reduce tombstoning, prevent delamination delamination /de·lam·i·na·tion/ (de-lam?i-na´shun) separation into layers, as of the blastoderm.

 and improve pick-and-place assembly."

The Envisium Power PLCC-4 SMT LEDs are based on the PLCC-4 standard package dimensions. The LED has a substrate made up of a molded plastic reflector reflector: see telescope.  on top of a bent lead frame. The die is attached within the reflector cavity, and the cavity is encapsulated by an Agilent proprietary epoxy blend. This package design, coupled with careful selection of component materials, allows the LEDs to perform with high reliability over the -40 C to +100 C temperature range, crucial in the harsh automotive operating environment In computing, an operating environment is the environment in which users run programs, whether in a command line interface, such as in MS-DOS or the Unix shell, or in a graphical user interface, such as in the Macintosh operating system. . The Agilent-designed PLCC-4 SMT package can be driven at high current due to its superior package and thermal design, and is compatible with both IR-solder reflow (1) The process of heating and melting the solder that has been screen printed onto a printed circuit board in order to bond chips and other components to the board. Surface mount chips (SMT) use the reflow method. Contrast with wave soldering. See also reflowable text.  and through-the-wave soldering.

Typical Performance Specifications

The Envisium Power PLCC-4 SMT LEDs offer these typical performance specifications at 50 mA operating current, -40 C to +100 C operating temperature:
Dominant Min. Luminous Total Flux
Wavelength/Color Intensity (Iv) mcd mlm (Typ.)
---------------- ------------------ ----------

630.0 nm Red 630-1000 2600.00
617 nm Red-orange 1000-1580 4300.00
592 nm Amber 630-1000 3000.00

Note: Minimum luminous intensity and typical total flux ranges are based on available intensity binning levels.

U.S. Pricing and Availability

Pricing of the Envisium PLCC-4 SMT LEDs is less than $0.20 in high-volume quantities. To facilitate easy pick-and-place assembly, the LEDs are packed in EIA-compliant tape and reel. Every reel will be shipped in single intensity and color bin (except for red) to provide close uniformity. Samples and production quantities (four-week lead time) are available now through Agilent's direct sales channel and its authorized distributors.
