, CA. At the first event of its kind for Agilent, spokespeople briefed the media and researchers in attendance on what makes Agilent Labs the "spark of the Agilent Technologies growth engine."

Agilent Technologies President and Chief Executive Officer, Ned Barnholt, kicked off the meeting by emphasizing that Agilent Labs is not solely aligned to any of Agilent's business groups. Instead, the laboratory is a "crucible crucible, vessel in which a substance is heated to a high temperature, as for fusing or calcining. The necessary properties of a crucible are that it maintain its mechanical strength and rigidity at high temperatures and that it not react in an undesirable way with  of multiple technologies," charged with providing technical breakthroughs that increase Agilent's competitiveness in its current product divisions and developing leading-edge technology that allows Agilent to enter new business. Spending $86 million on research and development in 2001 and boasting more than 400 employees, the lab concentrates on four technologies: life sciences; communications and optics; systems and solutions; and electronics.

After Barnholt's introduction, press and analysts spent several hours at their choice of breakout sessions led by Agilent management. Following the breakout sessions, Agilent Labs scientists provided demonstrations ranging from x-ray imaging machine vision tools of the future to a microelectromechanical system microelectromechanical system (MEMS)
