Agfa Monotype Licenses Fonts and Font Technologies to Samsung; Technologies to be Integrated in Samsung Printers and Multifunction Devices.

Business/Technology Editors

WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 2002

Agfa Monotype monotype, type set by the Monotype machine. See printing. Corporation has announced a worldwide font licensing agreement with Samsung Electronics. Samsung has licensed several components for integration in its complete line of PostScript(R)-based printers and multifunction devices: Agfa Monotype's UFST UFST - Universal Font Scaling Technology(R) (Universal Font Scaling Technology(TM)), a PostScript 3-compatible font package, a TrueType A scalable font technology that renders fonts for both the printer and the screen. Originally developed by Apple, it was enhanced jointly by Apple and Microsoft. TrueType fonts were included with Windows and the Mac (starting with Windows 3.1 and Mac OS 7).

Unlike PostScript, in which the algorithms are maintained in the rasterizing engine, each TrueType font contains its own algorithms for converting the outline into bitmaps.

"We needed a proven solution that would allow our products to quickly render high-quality text," said Mr. Jang Jae Lee, vice president of Samsung's Digital Printing Division. "Agfa Monotype clearly understood our needs, and we're now able to meet requirements for quality, speed, compatibility and small code size - without loss of font integrity."

"We're pleased that Samsung has chosen to partner with us," said Doug Shaw, senior vice president of Agfa Monotype's OEM business unit. "Our font technology also assures Samsung of being compatible with industry font standards."

UFST

Agfa Monotype's UFST is a compact, highly efficient embedded font scaling subsystem used in more than 90 percent of laser printers shipped worldwide. UFST reads, interprets and processes hinted font data to rapidly generate scaled character bitmaps, graymaps or grid-aligned outlines. The technology offers OEMs a lower ROM cost than alternative font rendering systems, and UFST is the only subsystem that uses industry-standard trademarked font names and font metrics Typographic information (width, height, kerning) for each character in a font., ensuring true compatibility with printers based on font standards by Adobe and Hewlett-Packard.

UFST works with all industry-standard font formats such as TrueType and PostScript, and the technology supports OpenType A font technology from Microsoft and Adobe that is a superset of TrueType and Adobe Type 1 fonts, allowing them both to reside in a common container format. Designed for cross-platform operations between Windows and Mac, OpenType provides advanced support for glyphs and ligatures that brings back the elegant typography that was done in the days when type was set by hand.(R) CFF CFF - Call For Fire

MicroType

MicroType is Agfa Monotype's patented, lossless font compression technology used within UFST for embedded applications. The technology generates characters of exceptionally high quality, without impeding size or performance. Just 1.3MB of ROM is required for Agfa Monotype's 136 PostScript 3-compatible fonts, much less than the 2MB required for alternative subsystems.

PostScript 3-compatible Font Collection

Each of Agfa Monotype's 136 PostScript 3-compatible fonts is fully compatible in design and metrics to their Adobe counterparts, and each includes the euro currency character and the Central European character set A group of unique symbols used for display and printing. Character sets for languages that use the English alphabet generally contain 256 symbols, which is the number of combinations one byte can hold. Except for special fonts, such as Dingbats and Greek symbols, the symbols are the same for the first 128 characters. The letters may have different styling due to their typeface, but an "M," for example, is an "M" in the same sequential order in each character set.. Two Multiple Master A font technology from Adobe that allows a typeface to be generated in different styles, from condensed to expanded and from light to heavy. Multiple Master can generate fonts that are more optically correct at both extremes in size from very small to very large than standard Type 1 fonts.(TM) fonts are provided in addition to the 136, allowing users to create thousands of font instances from a single file entry.
