"The challenge was to provide Symbian with exceptionally high quality bitmaps at very small sizes," said Doug Shaw, senior vice president of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  business at Agfa Monotype. "We were able to provide this technology through our team of typographers who have expertise in handling complex non-Latin fonts. The Chinese bitmaps have been hand-edited to ensure clarity and legibility of characters when displayed on small screens."

"It's clear that because of its size and increasingly rapid mobile phone adoption, the Chinese mobile phone market will be important to Symbian. Incorporating the Chinese bitmap fonts has enabled Symbian to provide fit-for-purpose solutions for licensees wishing to bring out mobile phones for this market," said Gad Chadha, partner manager at Symbian.

The Chinese bitmaps are Unicode(R)-encoded to the GB18030 character set and provide Symbian with Simplified Chinese language support as used in the Peoples Republic of China and Singapore. The character set complies with the current GB18030 standard and consists of approximately 20,000 characters.
