Agfa Introduces SnapScan 1236S Desktop Scanners; 36-Bit Flatbed Scanners Perfect for Both SOHO and Professional Applications.

WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 31, 1998--Agfa Desktop Products Group (DTP), the world's leading provider of award-winning desktop scanners and digital cameras, introduces the SnapScan 1236S and the SnapScan 1236S Artline - two 36-bit, flatbed color scanners designed for SOHO and professional applications. The SnapScan 1236S and 1236S Artline models are the latest in Agfa's series of award-winning SnapScan scanners.

The SnapScan 1236S brings the small and home office user the capability of powerful image capture, yet is priced to accommodate businesses that operate on a tight budget. Affordably-priced, the level of scanning performance remains high.

"The SnapScan 1236S scanners offer quality normally reserved for higher-end scanning equipment," says Per Save, vice president, marketing for Agfa's Desktop Products Group. "In the mid-range scanner category, where internationally we enjoy 40% market share, Agfa is well known for developing breakthroughs that allow lower cost flatbed scanners to rival high-end drum scanners. Our strategy is to bring a similar level of performance value to the SOHO user."

The performance specifics of each model in the SnapScan 1236S series are identical -- the differentiating factor between the units is the bundled software and the color of the scanner housing. Designed for the creative business user, the SnapScan 1236S Artline scanner includes a graphics-oriented, image enhancing software package. In addition, the color of the SnapScan 1236S Artline is dusky grey -- as opposed to the white SnapScan 1236S model.

The SnapScan 1236S scanners feature a 36-bit color depth (12 bits per color) and true 600 X 1200 optical resolution (can be interpolated up to 9600 ppi). In addition, the SnapScan 1236S scanners include a wide dynamic range and advanced editing tools for scanning a wide variety of originals.

The maximum scanning area of the SnapScan 1236S scanners is 8.5" X 11.7".

The SnapScan 1236S and 1236S Artline scanners are available on both PC (Win 95, Win 98 and Win NT 4.0) and Macintosh(tm) platforms. Agfa recommends a Pentium processor as the minimum system requirements for PC.

Software

The SnapScan 1236S ships with Agfa's FotoSnap scanner driver software, and Color-It! (for the Mac) and iPhoto Express (for the PC) image editing software. In addition, the SnapScan 1236S includes Caere's OmniPage LE OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software and Visioneer PaperPort document management software, for sending, filing, copying and finding scanned documents. In addition to FotoSnap, Color-It! (Mac) and iPhoto Express (PC), the SnapScan 1236S Artline includes creative tools from MetaCreations. They include Soap SE, which makes it possible to quickly and intuitively correct red-eye, remove scratches, wrinkles or other imperfections. Kai's Power Tools SE provides Special Effects filters for creating special textures, gradients, spheres, etc. Convolver Full is an extended set of tools for enhancing and experimenting with images; it gives users their own visual effects development lab. And Bryce 2.0 SE lets the user design and render 3D images.

Pricing and Availability

The PC versions of the SnapScan 1336S and 1236S Artline are currently shipping the United States. The Mac version will be available in October 1998. For both platforms, the SnapScan 1236S is available for a suggested price of $249, while the SnapScan 1236S Artline is available for the suggested price of $299.

SnapScan 1236S Options

An optional automatic document feeder (ADF) and transparency module further extend the scanner's professional capabilities. Both are currently available, at the price of $249 and $220, respectively.
