Agfa Introduces Polaris Computer-to-Plate System for Newspaper Industry; Advanced Digital Plate Manufacturing System Demonstrated At NEXPO.ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 1998-- Agfa today introduced the Polaris 100 metal platesetter - an advanced digital platesetting system with automation features and a format that is ideal for newspapers - into the U.S. market at NEXPO, the Newspaper Association of America's 70th Technical Exposition and Conference. The Polaris 100 incorporates features that specifically address a newspaper printer's need for speed, accuracy, and an automated au·to·mate v. au·to·mat·ed, au·to·mat·ing, au·to·mates v.tr. 1. To convert to automatic operation: automate a factory. 2. workflow. By transporting two plates simultaneously, the Polaris 100 achieves a production rate of 100 14.17-inch (360 mm) x 22.44-inch (570 mm) single-page newspaper plates per hour at 1016 dpi. An optional pre-loader/slip-sheet removal system increases productivity by an additional 20 percent. To speed workflow, the Polaris 100 features an automated plate transport system that extracts and positions the plates on a flat-bed imaging system, and then transports the exposed plates to an on-line processor. The entire process takes place without operator intervention, resulting in significant time and labor savings. Since its introduction last year in Europe, Agfa already has installed more than 50 Polaris 100 systems at more than 20 newspapers. The Agfa Polaris 100 platesetter is supported by Agfa's digital plates - Lithostar Plus and N90A. "Agfa is in a unique position as the single manufacturer of both electronics and plates, to design a system for optimal performance based on these known ingredients," said Steve Musselman, Agfa's marketing manager for computer-to-plate and imagesetting systems. The Polaris 100 system will digitally expose punched as well as unpunched plates. Panorama plates up to 25.6-inch (650 mm) x 41.1-inch (1045 mm) are available with an optional panorama plate trolley trolley: see streetcar. . For proper registration on press, the Polaris 100 automatically positions and secures plates on the imager with a set of retractable re·tract v. re·tract·ed, re·tract·ing, re·tracts v.tr. 1. To take back; disavow: refused to retract the statement. 2. register pins (for punched plates) or a three point stop (for unpunched plates). An on-line punch system can also be integrated into the workflow. Like all of Agfa's digital imaging solutions, the Polaris 100 platesetting system is capable of handling any PostScript The de facto standard page description language (PDL) in the graphics arts industry as well as in commercial printing. Developed by Adobe, many printers and most imagesetters support PostScript by having a built-in PostScript interpreter. file.
