Agfa Division of Bayer Corporation Seeks Restraining Order Against GE Medical Systems

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J., Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Bayer Corporation's Agfa Division announced today that it has filed suit to obtain a temporary restraining order against GE Medical Systems. The purpose is to prevent a former employee of Agfa from using Agfa's customer and product data to benefit GE's Medical Systems in the medical PACS field.

Agfa's IMPAX system is the world's leading medical PACS product line and is supported by a strong organization that has set the standard for PACS systems. GE Medical Systems is a major competitor of Agfa's IMPAX product line. The former Agfa employee, Vishal Wanchoo, was the head of Agfa's IMPAX team. In this role, he had integral knowledge of Agfa's customers and product development.

"Our PACS business success has been built by a talented team of people, and the loss of one person in no way jeopardizes our continued product strength and commitment to our customers, provided that GE does not misuse our trade secrets through Mr. Wanchoo," stated John Glass, Agfa's Senior Vice President, Medical Systems. "However," added Glass, "we are concerned that trade secrets and confidential customer information will end up in the hands of GE. We cannot allow this to happen."

Agfa, based in Ridgefield Park, N.J., is part of the Agfa-Gevaert Group, a leading worldwide manufacturer of imaging products and systems, with annual sales of $4.5 billion. Headquartered in Mortsel, Belgium, Agfa-Gevaert manufacturers and markets products and systems for the photographic and digital graphic communications, medical and technical diagnostic, and amateur and professional photographic markets. In the United States, Agfa operates as division of Bayer Corporation, a research-based company with major businesses in health care and life sciences, chemicals and imaging technologies. The company had 1996 sales of $9 billion and employs 24,000 people. Capital expenditures for 1996 totaled $632 million, and $621 million was spent for research and development. Bayer Corporation, with headquarters in Pittsburgh, is a member of the worldwide Bayer Group, a $32.4 billion chemical and pharmaceutical company, also based in Leverkusen, Germany.
