WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 10, 1997--

Agfa Solution Provides Small ROM Block, Improved Performance and

Industry Standard Trademarked Typeface Names

Agfa today announced the integration of its MicroType font compression technology by Xionics Document Technologies Inc.

MicroType will provide Xionics a 100 percent compatible PCL (Printer Command Language) The page description language for HP LaserJet printers. It has become a de facto standard used in many printers and typesetters. PCL Level 5, introduced with the LaserJet III in 1990, also supports Compugraphic's Intellifont scalable fonts.  6 and PostScript language interpreter solution, featuring Industry standard trademarked typeface names and designs. MicroType provides high-quality while significantly reducing memory requirements. A dual PCL and PostScript emulation Using a PostScript interpreter that is not from Adobe.  is available from a single MicroType font resource of less than 1.2 MB.

"Agfa is very pleased that Xionics has integrated MicroType," said Doug Shaw, Agfa's OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  Business Unit Director for Typographic Systems. "This announcement represents a continuation of the excellent relationship that we have had with Xionics over the past several years. By combining Agfa's font solution with Xionics' industry leading imaging technologies, the OEM receives a complete printing solution."

MicroType font compression dramatically reduces the PostScript 35 font collection to 429 Kb. MicroType's PostScript character generation is two times faster than existing solutions. The LaserJet 45 memory requirement is reduced to 820 Kb by MicroType, with character generation speeds four-times faster than font synthesis technologies. A combined solution of 80 PostScript and PCL typefaces is 70 percent smaller than other product offerings, with no loss in character quality.

Agfa offers the same industry standard trademarked names and designs utilized by Adobe and Hewlett-Packard. As a result of sublicensing agreements with Monotype monotype, type set by the Monotype machine. See printing.
