Agency seeks human rights nominees.

SPRINGFIELD - The Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect, also known as SAfER, is seeking nominations for its human rights award, which will be given at an event celebrating the life of Cesar Chavez Noun 1. Cesar Chavez - United States labor leader who organized farm workers (born 1927)

The person selected should demonstrate the values of social justice set forth by leaders such as Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King Jr. and Eleanor Roosevelt.

The nominee nominee n. 1) a person or entity who is requested or named to act for another, such as an agent or trustee. 2) a potential successor to another's rights under a contract.  must live or work in Springfield and be involved in human rights issues, either as an individual or through an organization.

"Through personal commitment and action in support of equality and respect, a nominee will be a person who exemplifies the spirit of Chavez and others who have dedicated their lives to human rights," an announcement from SAfER said.

The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Monday. They should be sent to P.O. Box 1214, Springfield, OR 97477; faxed to 485-0257; or e-mailed to calc@efn.org.

SAfER presents its Human Rights Leadership Awards three times a year.

On March 21, the City Council adopted an ordinance A law, statute, or regulation enacted by a Municipal Corporation.

An ordinance is a law passed by a municipal government. A municipality, such as a city, town, village, or borough, is a political subdivision of a state within which a municipal corporation has been
 authorizing sidewalk cafes in Springfield. The ordinance allows existing restaurants to serve food at sidewalk tables in front of their businesses if pedestrians can easily get by.

On Monday the council is expected to do it all over again.

Len Goodwin, technical services manager for the city, said that because of a clerical error an error made in copying or writing.

, the version of the ordinance that the council passed last month was not the updated version it had intended to pass.

The new version contains a couple changes from the original proposal.
