Agence France Presse Chooses Borland Development and Deployment Technology for Java.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 2002

Borland(R) Enterprise Server and Borland JBuilder(R) Used

to Build Satellite News Distribution Management System

Borland Software Corporation (company) Borland Software Corporation - A company that sells a variety of PC software development and database systems. Borland was founded in 1983 and initially became famous for their low-cost software, particularly Turbo Pascal, Turbo C, and Turbo Prolog.  (Nasdaq:BORL) today announced that leading Agence France Presse(R) (AFP (1) (AppleTalk Filing Protocol) The file sharing protocol used in an AppleTalk network. In order for non-Apple networks to access data in an AppleShare server, their protocols must translate into the AFP language. See file sharing protocol. (R)) has upgraded its satellite news distribution system with Borland(R) Enterprise Server and Borland JBuilder(R). The advent of multimedia technology such as animation sequences and videos brings a heavy increase in the transmitted volume of materials, causing AFP to rethink the design, development, and deployment of its technical model. The entire AFP news distribution model needed to be transformed with a faster, flexible and reliable development solution.

"The technical model we developed for text transmission was reaching its limits. We needed bigger throughputs to guarantee the quantity and quality that our clients have come to expect," said Jean-Christophe Garnier, project manager at AFP. "Moreover, we were burdened with an aging technical platform whose main drawbacks were high maintenance costs and proprietary lock-in, giving us little possibility of moving with the times."

AFP drew up a detailed specification for a full overhaul of the system. The project for the overall restructuring of the satellite distribution system was divided into three sub-projects. The first was devoted to the transmitters located worldwide; the second covered the receivers installed with the clients that retrieve and store data for subsequent access; and the third concerned overall system control.

The immediate priority was to establish a solid foundation using standard, reliable building blocks to minimize future difficulties in the development and integration of the new system. AFP opted for Digital Video Broadcasting. By using numerical technology, the solution enables a reduction in the cost of renting bandwidth from operators and an increase in throughput.

AFP had to resolve a number of issues including compatibility with industry standards, cost of maintenance and upgrades, reliability and platform independence with multiple operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. .

"We soon realized that in order to keep up with our ambitions, we needed to go with Java(TM)," Garnier said. "For development and deployment, Enterprise JavaBeans See EJB.

(specification, business, programming) Enterprise JavaBeans - (EJB) A server-side component architecture for writing reusable business logic and portable enterprise applications. EJB is the basis of Sun's Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE).
(TM) components provided the reusable, upgradeable building blocks we needed."

AFP is now embarking on the deployment phase of its project. Each of the main press agency's sites -- Paris, Washington and Hong Kong Hong Kong (hŏng kŏng), Mandarin Xianggang, special administrative region of China, formerly a British crown colony (2005 est. pop. 6,899,000), land area 422 sq mi (1,092 sq km), adjacent to Guangdong prov.  -- will have one or two servers deployed.

"Using Borland's leading technology for Java has allowed us to create these mission critical systems in-house, thereby reducing costs on external resources," Garnier said. "AFP chose Borland Enterprise Server Borland Enterprise Server, also known as Borland Application Server, was Borland's J2EE Application Server. The product was developed in 1999 within the team of former Visigenic company that was acquired by Borland in 1997. , AppServer(TM) Edition and JBuilder for their reliability, speed, compliance with standards, Enterprise JavaBean Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) is a managed, server-side component architecture for modular construction of enterprise applications.

The EJB specification is one of the several Java APIs in the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition.

J2EE services are performed in the middle tier between the user's machine and the enterprise's databases and legacy information systems. (TM) development and implementation."

"Borland Enterprise Server provides linear scalability, strict compliance with J2EE and CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global (R) standards and tight integration with Borland JBuilder, making it the solution to be reckoned with in this critical project," said Daniel Damin, country manager for France.
