Nine European researchers report findings from an international cooperative project identifying specific ways to facilitate the mobility of elderly people to help them participate in society and maintain quality of life in old age. The investigation consisted of several stages conducted at approximately the same time in urban regions with different settlement and transport infrastructures and in outskirts not frequently served by public transport in eastern and western Germany The geographic term Western Germany (German: Westdeutschland) is used to describe a region in the west of Germany. The exact area defined by the term is not constant, but it usually includes North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, the , Finland, and Italy; elements of the initial study were later conducted in a residential area in the Netherlands. By comparing various regions of Europe Europe is often divided into regions due to geographical, cultural or historical criteria. Some common divisions are as follows. Directional divisions
Groupings by compass directions are the hardest to define in Europe, since (among other issues) the pure geographical criteria
, the study reveals ways that the mobility of the elderly is affected by different infrastructures, the possession of means of transportation, and various cultural traditions, and suggests problem-solving alternatives and strategies for meeting the mobility needs of the elderly. No subject index.
