BB: AGTE) today announced it will soon be releasing its next generation new HotChip(TM), a "hot swap To pull out a component from a system and plug in a new one while the main power is still on. Also called "hot plug" and "hot insertion," hot swap is a feature of USB devices, allowing an external drive, network adapter or other peripheral to be plugged in without having to power down the " IDE Plug & Play ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  (Application Specific Integrated Circuit integrated circuit (IC), electronic circuit built on a semiconductor substrate, usually one of single-crystal silicon. The circuit, often called a chip, is packaged in a hermetically sealed case or a nonhermetic plastic capsule, with leads extending from it for ) chip with software driver, to support the Linux operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
on Intel-based workstations and Internet Server Appliances A self-contained computer system specialized for Internet or intranet use with primary access to setup and configuration through a browser. See server appliance. . Agate is recognized as the industry leader in supplying IDE hot swap capability to the notebook OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  market, as well as generic IDE device level Plug & Play solutions to support Windows 95/98 and NT 4.0 on PC desktops.

Hot swap is an industry term implying that a component of a computer, such as a hard drive, can be attached or detached physically and electrically without impeding the performance and state of the computer. Agate's HotChip(TM) is based on its new intelliSWAP(TM) architecture that offers user-friendly auto-activation of target applications for gaining immediate access to user data upon simple device insertion. This solution not only reduces computer downtime, but also simplifies repair and upgrade requirements on Linux-based workstations and internet appliances. It also allows the sharing and migration of large Windows-based data repositories to Linux-based systems.

With the growing acceptance of Linux in the PC industry, and recent versions robust enough to contend for enterprise OS space, Agate feels the time is right to port the intelliSWAP(TM) agent technology to Linux to provide the Plug & Play scalability necessary for true enterprise level system support and availability. "Linux is all about open systems, stability, and value," said Francis Khoo, Chief Executive Officer at Agate. "In our view, the flexibility and power of the intelliSWAP(TM) engine was developed with this same value proposition in mind. With advances in processor performance and IDE hard drive capabilities, the PC is optimal for taking on enterprise level tasks. Linux and Agate make enterprise level scalability affordable for everyone."

Agate is expected to release HotChip(TM) for Linux by April 2000. The version is targeting primary compatibility with Red Hat Linux Red Hat Linux, assembled by Red Hat, was a popular, "middle-aged" Linux distribution (not as old as Slackware but older than Ubuntu) upon its discontinuation in 2004.[1]

Red Hat Linux 1.0 was released on November 3, 1994.
6.1 and is expected to provide cross industry support for all Linux OS vendors.
