Top-seeded and four-time Sybase Open champion Andre Agassi Andre Kirk Agassi (born April 29 1970, in Las Vegas, Nevada) is a former World No. 1 professional tennis player from the United States who won eight Grand Slam singles tournaments and an Olympic gold medal in singles.  withdrew from the tournament Tuesday evening with a lower back strain.

Agassi informed tournament director Barry MacKay Barry MacKay (born August 31, 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States) is a former tennis player, tournament director, television broadcaster from the United States. He was the NCAA Singles Tennis Champion in 1957 while playing for University of Michigan and was a doubles finalist  of his withdrawl Tuesday after his one hour workout session at the San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  Tennis Club was cut short to 30 minutes earlier in the day after experiencing severe pain in his lower back.

Following the workout, Agassi then underwent an examination that confirmed the back injury.

Agassi will be examined on-site Wednesday by tournament physician Dr. James Garrick and a press conference is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. in the interview room at the San Jose Arena.

Agassi arrived into the Bay Area on Monday afternoon from his 24 hour trip from Harare, Zimbabwe, where he helped the U.S. to a 3-2 first round Davis Cup Davis Cup: see tennis.

Agassi, who was scheduled to play Mark Woodforde in the first round on Wednesday night, will be replaced in the main draw by lucky loser Scott Humphries.
