Afternic.com Opens Domain Name Dialogues to the Public With Industry and Policy Discussion Forums; Domain name exchange lifts the curtain on formerly private debates.

Business Editors and Technology Writers

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 2000

In a move unique in the domain name industry, Afternic.com has, for the very first time, given the public access to the roiling debates on issues concerning domain name policy, law, business and technology.

Until now, public access to educated opinions and high-level discussions has been essentially off-limits off-limĀ·its

Afternic.com's discussion categories range from Marketplace, where visitors can request information and give advice related to the management of their domain name assets, to Technology Resources, which is dedicated to building effective Web sites and choosing service providers. Other Forum headings include Industry (trend analysis), Afternic Community (site-related issues and suggestions), Policy & Legal (a discussion of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, www.icann.org) A non-profit, international association founded in 1998 and incorporated in the U.S. It is the successor to IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), which manages Internet addresses, domain names and the huge number  policies and domain issues) and Business Resources (maximizing the value of online brands).

Maroney and Jon Whelan said that Afternic.com's new Discussion Forums further establish the site as the domain name industry's true information hub. Specifically, they cited such current, hot button topics as the UDRP UDRP Uniform Domain-name Dispute-Resolution Policy  (Universal Dispute Resolution Policy), implemented to arbitrate worldwide domain disputes, and the new generic top-level domains See Internet domain name.  being considered by ICANN as issues that would benefit greatly from public airing.

"The Afternic.com Discussion Forums are designed to be the 'Slashdot' for the domain industry." Maroney said. "I think the policy discussions in particular will be interesting. There is a chasm between the inner circle of pundits who understand how ICANN works and how policy gets decided -- and the large community of individuals and small businesses that actually own and use domain names," he continued. "Our goal is to provide a place where the gap can be bridged, where meaningful dialogue and community consensus on domain name issues can evolve."

Whelan agreed. "The Afternic.com Discussion Forums will bring established industry experts together with people who simply want to learn more, or who have an opinion they think is worth sharing," he noted. "The discussions that take place at Afternic.com will be the best-informed on the Web."
