When people acquitted by reason of insanity insanity, mental disorder of such severity as to render its victim incapable of managing his affairs or of conforming to social standards. Today, the term insanity is used chiefly in criminal law, to denote mental aberrations or defects that may relieve a person from  return to the community, says Shaw (Yale U.) mental health administrators and clinicians must provide services to them in the least restrictive setting possible while also protecting members of the community from criminal activity. After summarizing results from 20 studies conducted between 1966 and 1999 that sought to find the correct balance between the two requirements, he describes his own study, its results, and its policy and research implications.
