Sean Ridley's unsolved killing is as painful now for his family as it was on January 30, 2004, when the slaying took place. His loved ones have never given up hope that his murderer will be brought to justice after a cruel twist of fate saw an abrupt halt to a crown court case and the accused walking free. But they say their pain still lives on as they fight with the turmoil of knowing his killer is still out there. Sean, 38, was beaten up outside his girlfriend's house in Sovereign Court, Elswick, Newcastle, and died from head injuries. The attack followed a night out at the Balmoral pub on Westgate Road. Michael Newton was accused of killing the dad-of-two. But when Judge David Hodson heard the case, he directed the jury to return a not guilty verdict because of the lack of evidence. Prosecutors claimed Newton punched Sean to the ground then kicked and stamped on his head. Newton admitted his involvement to police, but maintained others had caused Sean's fatal injuries. No-one else was charged and police admitted mistakes were made during the investigation. Since the murder, the Ridley family have been desperate for answers, and Sean's brother and sister, Larry Ridley Larry Ridley born September 3,1937 is an American jazz bassist and music educator. Ridley has recorded few sessions as leader; he is known primarily as a sideman. Artists that Ridley has toured, recorded, or performed with include Wes Montgomery, Hank Mobley, Freddie and Yvonne Pacitti, met Crown Prosecution Service Yvonne and her twin Michael, both 46, Larry, 45, with wife Shelly, 45, dad Billy, 76, sisters Maureen, 49, Linda, 57, Lorraine, 55, and brothers Terry, 54, and Raymond, 59, with Sean's daughters Terri, 21, and Jamie, 19, will visit the grave as they remember Sean's life today. Yvonne, of Elswick, said: "I can't believe that it is five years since Sean's death. No one was ever brought to justice, so we can't have closure. Sean's killer is still on the loose. I still cry when I think about it.. "Sean should be here with us. He was in the prime of his life and we should be together." Since the murder, Yvonne has not been able to return to work as a teaching assistant. In 2005, police reopened the investigation and a team, headed by Det Supt Barbara Franklin and Det Chief Insp Tim Walker, sifted the evidence. Det Supt Franklin said at the time they were "satisfied" they could not do any more. Larry, from Newcastle's West End, went through his marriage ceremony to Shelly Jefferson last year with the memory of his brother strong in his thoughts and a photograph of him close to his heart. Larry said: "Sean should have been my best man last year, but he could only be there in spirit. I will never get over his death as long as his killer is out there." The Ridley family will be at the National Victims' Association's service at St Mary's Church in Newcastle on February 14.
