number of reported stolen vehicles decreased in Eugene last year. Auto thefts declined by 538 from a record high of 1,734 reports in 2005.

Last year's total, 1,196, is still significantly higher than just five years before; auto theft spiked by 125 percent in Lane County between 2001 and 2005.

But the drop does give law enforcement hope that the worst is over.

Eugene police Detective Dennis Doe, who specializes in auto theft investigations, said improved communication between police departments has helped. For example, detectives in Springfield will call him when they arrest a suspect, in hopes of linking the person to additional crimes in Eugene, Doe said.

"That information flow going back and forth helps us win the battle," he said. "They can't use a dividing line Noun 1. dividing line - a conceptual separation or distinction; "there is a narrow line between sanity and insanity"

Police also credit the drop to a shift in their strategy for investigating all property crime, car theft included, Eugene police spokeswoman Kerry Delf said.

Detectives target cases they believe are tied to the most prolific thieves, so they can help the Lane County District Attorney's Office build stronger cases to prosecute To follow through; to commence and continue an action or judicial proceeding to its ultimate conclusion. So far, Delf said, the results have paid off.

"We have been able to get significant convictions for property theft," she said.

Doe characterized car theft as "cyclical cyclical

"But if they're off the street and in prison, they can't commit the crimes," he said.
