After Frankie split just one man offered me work..Simon Cowell; HOLLY JOHNSON FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD.

Byline: OLIVIA BUXTON

EIGHTEEN years ago, Holly Johnson Holly Johnson is an artist, writer and musician (born William Johnson on February 9, 1960 in Liverpool, England; name on passport William Holly Johnson). Some sources erroneously suggest he was born in Khartoum, a myth Johnson himself apparently started during an  was in the doldrums.

Now, in an exclusive interview with the Mirror, Holly reveals how one man refused to give up on him - a then little-known music industry executive named Simon Cowell Simon Cowell (born 7 October, 1959) is a British artist and repertoire ("A&R") executive for Sony BMG in the United Kingdom and a television producer, more commonly known as a judge on television programmes such as Pop Idol, The X Factor, American Idol .

"It was a very hard and dark time for me. I was gravely ill and no one knew if I would make it.

"I had little support from people in the music business and I didn't hear from any of the other band members.

"But Simon Cowell was one of the very few people who came round to my house to see that I was OK.

"He knew that I wasn't in the best of health and he had seen me walking my dog Funky on Parsons Green Coordinates:

MESSAGE

"I got a message that he wanted to work with me, so I sent him some demos of new songs and he came round and suggested that I do an album of cover versions."

However, Holly was reluctant to go down that route, a path which later proved phenomenally successful for Cowell's double act Robson & Jerome.

He smiles: "It was very kind of Simon but, as a songwriter, I felt I would rather perform my own songs than the Unchained Melody type A melody type is a term used by musicologists and ethnomusicologists to represent a set of melodic formulas, figures, and patterns which are used in the composition of an enormous variety of music, especially non-Western and early Western music.  of song, which I know he likes.

"I politely declined but it was left that if I had any ideas for covering songs then I should get in touch. I never did but I really appreciated it.

"Simon was the only person who made an offer to me like that and, to this day, I have got a soft spot for him.

"He deserves every success in life and has fulfilled his personal ambitions and facilitated the success of others. I'm a big fan of his and I love the X Factor."

in Liverpool, Holly was the driving force behind pop powerhouse Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Their 1984 debut single Relax was famously boycotted by Radio One DJ Mike Read for being too explicit and the track - which was slipping down the charts - catapulted to No1 and became one of the biggest-selling UK singles of all time.

Their next two singles - Two Tribes and The Power of Love - also went to No1, making them only the second act in UK history to top the charts with their first three singles.

By the summer of 1984, the country was gripped by Frankie-mania, with their famous slogan T-shirts, including Frankie Say Relax Don't Do It, flying off the shelves.

Their debut album Welcome To The Pleasuredome sold three million copies - but, in the years that followed, growing tensions within the band ripped them apart.

"The defining moment when I knew I wanted to leave was when one of the band members lashed out at me," says Holly.

"He literally had to be dragged off by other people and I thought, 'Well that's the end of the line.' I can't tolerate physical violence."

A bitter two-year court battle ensued and Holly fought tirelessly to be released from his record contract with label ZTT ZTT Zero to Three (National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families)
ZTT Zero Transfer Time (Uninterruptible Power Supply systems)
.

In 1989 a victorious Holly could finally sign to MCA Records MCA Records was an American-based record company owned by MCA Inc., which later gave way to the larger MCA Music Entertainment Group, which MCA Records was still part of. . His debut album Blast went to No1, selling over 300,000 copies, spawning two Top Five singles, Love Train and Americanos.

In 1991, Holly released his second solo album, Dreams That Money Can't Buy, before he left the label after a dispute over promotional budgets.

However, all hopes of continuing his solo career were dashed when Holly was diagnosed with HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States. .

"But there was little point in being tested at that time. Partly because I was afraid of what the result would be and also there was no medication.

"By 1991, my health had got so bad and I had to be tested. I found out that I was HIV positive a few days before the death of Freddie Mercury. I'm very lucky to even be here. "One doctor said I could have two months to live or two years, they didn't know, and my reaction was that I'd better write my memoirs quickly!

"I was very unwell but I managed to write my autobiography My Autobiography has been frequently used as a title for autobiographies, including that of:

  • Max Müller's (1901)
  • Mark Twain's
A Bone In My Flute, which was published in 1994. I also set up my own record label Pleasuredome, and released my third solo album, Soulstream, which I recorded at home.

HEALTH

"For some reason, I survived with a compromised immunity but I was very well looked after by my partner Wolfgang [Kuhle] who went beyond the call of duty in caring for me.

"He really kept me alive until the advent of combination therapy in 1996. But until that point I was in and out of hospital every five minutes."

Holly decided to use another creative outlet and eventually enrolled at art school in 2001.

Since then he has had his art exhibited at the Royal Academy and currently has work on display at the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art alongside famous artist David Hockney David Hockney, CH, RA, (born July 9, 1937) is an English artist, based in Los Angeles, California, United States. An important contributor to the British Pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. .

So would Holly ever want to go back and reform with the other members of Frankie Goes To Hollywood? He says: "I enjoyed the early days of dressing up, that feeling of togetherness that you have and having our first No1 and all those things but there will never be a reunion.

"You never know, one day I might speak to the band. It might feel like the right thing to do and I bear no ill will towards them.

"I do think it's great that bands like Spandau Ballet have reformed and if they can overcome their differences, all get on together and have that stamina to do the arena tour, then more power to them.

"I have had offers recently to tour and I would love to do some concerts and record another album but we'll see. I take each day at a time at the moment."

FRANKIE Say Greatest Hits album is out now, and Holly's solo albums Blast & Dreams That Money Can't Buy are released on November 9.
