After 13 years of legal wrangling, boys may be back in the UK.


1993: Jeff and Leslie move to Florida, after starting married life in Liverpool, but eventually return to Merseyside when Leslie falls pregnant with Louis. 2000: The family return to Florida but Louis and Jon never settle there.

2004: Leslie moves out of the family home and the couple start divorce proceedings. March 3, 2005: Jeff flies back to Liverpool with his sons to start a new life. By leaving Florida, Jeff breaks an agreement in his divorce proceedings to keep Louis and Jon in the state. Mid-March, 2005: Leslie, a US citizen, launches international child abduction Child abduction is the abduction or kidnapping of a child (or baby) by an older person.

Several distinct forms of child abduction exist:
  • A stranger removes a child for criminal or mischievous purposes.
 charges and Merseyside police Merseyside Police is the Home Office police force responsible for policing Merseyside in North West England.

The force area is 647 square kilometres with a population of around 1.5 million. At present the force has 4,466 police officers plus over 2,000 police staff.
 confiscate To expropriate private property for public use without compensating the owner under the authority of the Police Power of the government. To seize property.

When property is confiscated it is transferred from private to public use, usually for reasons such as
 Jeff, Louis and Jon's passports. A high court judge orders the family to return to the US. April 13, 2005: Louis locks himself in an airport toilet and refuses to board the US-bound plane.

April 14, 2005: A second attempt is made to fly the boys back to Florida but Louis again refuses to leave.

April 15, 2005: Louis hires his own legal eagle to fight his case in court.

April 26, 2005: Jeff and his sons spend the day in the high court in London when a judge orders the family to return to the US immediately.

May 1, 2005: The family reluctantly fly back to Florida. June 7, 2005: Fundraising

 for the Return-to-Liverpool legal fighting fund hits pounds 3,667. July 5, 2005: In an email to the ECHO, Louis says: "Can you help us? I heard my dad on the phone to my auntie Christine saying they needed more money to get me back home. I think it must be for my dad's solicitor. I really don't like it here and I need to get home soon. Please help." September, 2005: The boys miss the start of the new UK academic year.

November 25, 2005: In an email to the ECHO, Louis says: "As you know I am still in stinkhole Florida. It has been a hard couple of months here in the States. Please try to put this information in the ECHO - I am in big need of help." January 31, 2006: Louis emails his teacher at Knotty knot·ty

April 7, 2006: Louis and Jon fly back to the UK with their dad Jeff to attend their grandad's funeral. Summer, 2006: The final court case, to decide whether the brothers can return to Merseyside once and for all is due to begin.
