Afro-fusion master class.

With intensity worthy of the stage, Vincent Mantsoe explodes in high-kneed jumping, seemingly defying gravity. He infects the room with energized warmth as he pulses to the sound of drumbeats.

An internationally awarded choreographer, dancer, and teacher, Mantsoe gave a master class in his Afro-fusion technique at the CHICAGO CULTURAL CENTER in March. This style mixes his experiences as the son of a Zulu healer with ballet, modern, Tai Chi, Balinese, and release technique.

While teaching, Mantsoe emphasizes length in the hip flexors, arm movements that initiate from the scapula, and a connected core. Although students in his master class struggled with his pace, the class ended with whirling arms and feet propelled in step with him.

His dancing and philosophy honor tradition through modern interpretation. Mantsoe embodies this through combining his two worlds: his rural South African village and the cosmopolitan cities he tours to. Present in every moment, he has the charisma of a constant performer.--Cheryl Olendzki
