African women speak out in preparations for the Millennium +5 Summit/Les femmes Africaines s'experiment lors de preparatifs du Sommet du Millennaire+ 5.


The General Assembly, by its resolution 59/145 of 17 ecember 2004, requested the President of the General sembly, in consultation with representatives of non-governmental organizations, to organize informal interactive hearings in June 2005 in New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 with representatives of non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations and the private sector, as an input to the preparatory process of the High-level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly to be held on 14 to 16 September 2005.

By its resolution 59/291 of 15 April 2005, the General Assembly decided that the President of the General Assembly shall preside pre·side

1. To hold the position of authority; act as chairperson or president.

2. To possess or exercise authority or control.

 over the informal interactive hearings. The Informal Interactive Hearings of the GA with non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations and the private sector were subsequently held on 23 to 24 June 2005 at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The GA Hearings provided a historic opportunity for civil society and the private sector to voice their views to member states on the UN Secretary General's proposals for the Millennium Summit The Millennium Summit was a meeting among many world leaders lasting three days from 6 September[1] to 8 September 2000[2] at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.  in September 2005. The themes for the Informal Interactive Hearings were based on clusters set out in the comprehensive report of the Secretary General of 21 March 2005 entitled "In Larger Freedoms".

Mama Koite Doumbia Mama Kotie Doumbia is a Malian politician and a member of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union, representing West Africa. , Chairperson of Executive Board of FEMNET, represented FEMNET at the Interactive Hearings. Below is a summary of the proceedings and Mama Koite's panelist presentation under discussions on the 'Freedom from Want' Cluster.

The General Assembly, representatives from Non-governmental organizations, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Private Sector, jointly organized the Informal Interactive Hearings that took place on 23-24 June 2005 in New York.

This unprecedented dialogue was held in the context of the preparatory process of the World Summit scheduled for 14-16 September 2005 which will examine the UN reform proposals included in the Secretary General's Report and will assess the steps achieved with regard to the commitments made in 2000 concerning the Millennium Development Goals “MDG” redirects here. For other uses, see MDG (disambiguation).

The Millennium Development Goals are eight goals that 192 United Nations member states have agreed to try to achieve by the year 2015.
 (MDGs).

More than 200 non-governmental actors and 1,000 other people who had been invited to participate as observers were given the opportunity to bring their contribution to the ongoing discussions on development, security and human rights issues.

The General Assembly President, Jean Ping Jean Ping (born November 24, 1942[1]) has been the foreign minister of Gabon since 1999. He also held that position briefly during 1994.

Ping previously held a succession of positions in the government; he was director of the cabinet from 1984 to 1990, then became
, chaired the ceremony. While addressing the meeting, he stressed the strong move by the GA to take into consideration civil society vision in the above-mentioned reforms.

Renate Bloem, CONGO Chairperson, speaking on behalf of the civil society, recalled how important the September Summit is and stressed that the leaders of the whole world have the capacity to make decisions that will affect not only the future of the United Nations but also of the world.

She expressed her hope that the interactive forum would be institutionalized in·sti·tu·tion·al·ize

THEMATIC ROUND TABLES

Four round tables were organized around the following themes:

* Living in dignity;

* Living free from need;

* Living free from fear;

* Strengthening the UN;

"Living in dignity" round table

The outstanding ideas from this theme were the following:

* The connection between security, development and human rights;

* The necessity to give human rights a central position within the UN structures;

* The creation of a Human Rights Council that is capable of reacting quickly has met wide support;

* The political will for women's rights The effort to secure equal rights for women and to remove gender discrimination from laws, institutions, and behavioral patterns.

The women's rights movement began in the nineteenth century with the demand by some women reformers for the right to vote, known as suffrage, and

* The eradication of violence committed against women;

* Winning people's hearts instead of imposing ideologies upon them;

* Increasing resources for the Units within the UN;

* Reinforcement of dialogue between UN and Civil Society;

* The right to veto not to be used in cases of genocides;

The round table on "Living free from Need"

This round table was divided into 2 sessions: MDG MDG Millennium Development Goals (UNDP)
MDG Madagascar (ISO Country code)
MDG Medical Group (USAF)
MDG Air Madagascar (ICAO code) 
 objectives 1 to 7, on the one hand, and MDG objective 8 on the other hand.

The summaries stressed the following points:

* Insufficient quality and quantity of development aid;

* Frameworks in connection with assistance that must be redefined (for the sake of democracy and respect of human rights);

* Neo-Liberal policies: Globalization globalization

Process by which the experience of everyday life, marked by the diffusion of commodities and ideas, is becoming standardized around the world. Factors that have contributed to globalization include increasingly sophisticated communications and transportation

 stressed the feminization of poverty The feminization of poverty is a phenomenon that has been observed in the United States since 1970 as female headed households accounted for a growing proportion of those below the poverty line.  mostly in Africa and made proposals with regard to the implementation of MDGs.

* Investing in the youth;

* Access to NTTC NTTC National Technology Transfer Center
NTTC Naval Technical Training Center
NTTC National Tank Truck Carriers, Inc.
NTTC North Texas Technology Council
NTTC Non-Taxable Transaction Certificate (state of New Mexico)

* Environment protection;

* Poverty elimination rather than its mere reduction;

* Increasing Development Public Aid (DPA DPA - Data Protection Act );

* Transparency requirement in the management of developing countries;

* Respect for individual and collective rights as a pre-condition for assistance.

"Living free from fear" roundtable

The summaries stressed the following points:

* War prevention;

* Prevention and peace consolidation in partnership with the Civil Society and, in particular, with women;

* Responsibility to prated civilian populations in case of conflicts;

* The peace culture;

* Reinforcement of mediation and good offices;

* Support to regional and sub-regional organisations (such as the African Union African Union (AU), international organization established in 2002 by the nations of the former Organization of African Unity (OAU). The AU is the successor organization to the OAU, with greater powers to promote African economic, social, and political integration, );

* The implementation of Protocols, Declarations and Treaties;

* Non-propagation of light weapons;

* Fighting violence committed against women in conflict areas;

* Policy coordination with regard to Peace (Creation of a structure within the UN);

* There is an increase in regard to the effort made by the International Community in the field of post-conflict reconstruction;

* Fight against terrorism should not distract Governments from the vital needs of people.

The round table on "Reforms of the United nations"

The following ideas came out from that session:

* Promotion of women within all the UN system;

* Adoption of more vigorous approaches for the financing of UN activities;

* In-depth reform of the Security Council and inclusion therein of countries from the South;

* Reinforcement of ECOSOC so that it can play its role better;

* Restructuring of Agencies which support women together with their financial and human resources The fancy word for "people." The human resources department within an organization, years ago known as the "personnel department," manages the administrative aspects of the employees. ;

* Apply adequate monetary governance;

* Civil Society representation within the Human Rights Council;

* Reinforcement of cooperation between the World Bank and donors;

* Change of relationships between the Financial Institutions and UN;

* Professionalism with regard to the UN Secretariat;

* Involvement of the youth in UN activities (Summits, Conferences etc).

CLOSING CEREMONY

There were three highlights at this ceremony: the presentation of the reports on different sessions, and speeches by the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan Kofi Atta Annan (born April 8, 1938) is a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1 1997 to January 1 2007, serving two five-year terms. He was the co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. , and the General Assembly President.

In their respective speeches, both personalities expressed the hope that the promise to pursue dialogue with the Civil Society on matters of peoples' interests would be upheld and that their voices will be heard at the September Summit.

 Pleniere de Haut Niveau de l'Assemblee Generale qui devait se tenir le 16 septembre 2005.

Dans sa resolution 59/291 du 15 avril 2005, l'Assemblee Generale a decide que son President dirige les deliberations des Auditions Informelles Interactives (1). Les Auditions Informelles Interactives de l'AG avec les Organisations Non-Gouvernementales, la Societe Civile et le Secteur Prive se sont tenues subsequemment les 23 et 24 juin 2005 au siege des Nations Unies a New York.

Les Auditions de l'AG ont offert une opportunite historique a la Societe Civile et au Secteur Prive de faire des recommandations aux Etats membres sur les propositions du Secretaire General dans le cadre du Sommet du Millenaire en septembre 2005. Les themes des Auditions Informelles Interactives etaient bases sur les groupes produits dans le rapport inclusif du Secretaire General en date du 21 mars 2005, rapport intitule in·tit·ule

Plus de 200 acteurs des Organisations Non-Gouvernementaux et 1000 autres personnes invitees a participer en qualite d'observateurs ont eu l'opportunite d'apporter leurs contributions aux deliberations en cours sur les questions relatives au developpement, a la securite et aux droits de la personne.

Le President de l'Assemblee Generale, Jean Ping, a dirige la ceremonie. S'adressant a l'assemblee, il a mis l'accent sur la grande decision prise par l'AG en vue de prendre en compte la vision de la Societe Civile dans le cadre des reformes sus-mentionnees.

Renata Bloem, Presidente de CONGO, parlant au nom de la societe civile, a rappele l'importance du Sommet de septembre tout en indiquant que tous les leaders mondiaux ont la responsabilite de prendre des decisions qui n'affectent pas seulement l'avenir des Nations Unies mais egalement le monde n. 1. LA CEREMONIE DE CLOTURE The procedure by which debate is formally ended in a meeting or legislature so that a vote may be taken.

Trois points ont marque la ceremonie:la lecture des rapports des differentes sessions, le discours du Secretaire General Koffi Annan et celui du President de l'Assemblee Generale.

Dans leurs discours respectifs, toutes ces personnalites ont exprime leur desir de garder leur promesse de continuer le dialogue avec la societe civile chaque fois qu'il sera question d'interets des peuples et de faire entendre leurs voix au Sommet de septembre.
