In Tanzania, Motorola recently deployed GSM self-contained compact InCell(TM) base stations as part of the digital cellular system for Tritel Telecommunication Tanzania Ltd. to provide service for up to 10,000 subscribers in eastern Tanzania, including Dar es Salaam Dar es Salaam

Siemens supplied D900 switching equipment for the MSC (1) (MSC.Software Corporation, Santa Ana, CA, www.mscsoftware.com) Founded in 1963 by Richard H. MacNeal and Robert G. Schwendler, MSC is the world's largest provider of mechanical computer aided engineering (MCAE) strategies, simulation software and services.  (Mobile Switching Center). The deployment is to be completed in two phases with the first phase currently in commercial service.

In Lesotho, Vodacom Lesotho (Pty) Ltd. has contracted for the installation of Motorola's GSM InCell base stations and Siemens D900 switches. The digital cellular network will have the capacity to serve 2,000 subscribers in Maseru, Buthe Buthe and surrounding areas. The system is scheduled for commercial service in April of 1996. This will be both Motorola's and Siemens' first cellular system in Lesotho.

"These two systems represent tremendous steps forward in expanding cellular phone service throughout Africa," said Pertti Johansson, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's ICID. "GSM has been accepted as the cellular standard by many African countries and Motorola together with Siemens is the major GSM equipment provider to the continent."

GSM is a digital cellular standard based on an open architecture network that allows operators to combine equipment from a variety of suppliers and gives subscribers the ability to roam between countries. Adopted internationally, GSM uses the same number of frequencies as traditional analog but in tighter re-use patterns and more traffic-carrying capacity. To date, Motorola has been awarded seven GSM contracts in Africa and more than 50 GSM contracts worldwide.

According to Peter Riha, managing director of Siemens Public Communication Networks, "The Siemens/Motorola combination has been highly successful in Africa to the extent that GSM has become the de facto [Latin, In fact.] In fact, in deed, actually.
