Africa to complain over cotton subsidies. (Agriculture).
Cotton growing countries in central and west Africa have united to
meet threats posed by subsidies developed nations pay to their own
producers. Noting that subsidies to cotton growers in the United States
will total $173bn for the next decade, Cote d'Ivoire Agriculture
Minister, Sebastian Dano Djedje, says Africa "must fight to save
our cotton sector to ensure that the new international economic order
plays according to equal rules". The 20-country bloc, representing
around 10m people dependent on cotton production, is to present a
complaint, the Abidjan Memorandum, at the dispute settlement body of the
World Trade Organisation (WTO).
