Afilias to Provide Registry Services for .aero Top Level Domain.

), today announced that it has signed an agreement with Afilias who will provide registry services for .aero, the top level domain (TLD (Top Level Domain) The highest level domain category in the Internet domain naming system. There are two types: the generic top level domains (gTLDs) such as .com, .org, and .net, and the country codes, such as .ca, .uk and .jp. See gTLD and Internet domain name. ) of the aviation industry.

The agreement was signed following a thorough application process in which a Request for Proposal (RFP (Request For Proposal) A document that invites a vendor to submit a bid for hardware, software and/or services. It may provide a general or very detailed specification of the system.

The selection process was monitored, and the final choice made in consultation with the Dot Aero Council The Dot Aero Council is a group created by SITA to advise on the development of the .aero TLD. Various groups involved in aviation are represented on the council.

.aero domain registrants will benefit from near real-time updates to their information, more competitive pricing, and better access to domain registration services.

Under the terms of the agreement, Afilias will manage registry operations (including ensuring high availability and diverse DNS (Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the  service) and will provide technical and administrative support. Through their system, SITA SC will continue to manage eligibility verification of registrants and allocation of domain names to ensure the integrity and exclusivity of the domain.
